Jul 30, 1937---Aug 07, 2025

Thomas Dailey, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away peacefully after a life richly lived.

Born July 30, 1937, in Kansas City, Kansas, Tom was one of many in a proud Irish family known for their strong bonds and lively gatherings. He grew up in the vibrant Armourdale neighborhood, where circus parades, watering elephants, and the infamous tale of his father’s pet goose—cooked by his mother one Sunday—became part of his legendary storytelling. These stories, always shared with laughter, were a testament to a life filled with joy and humor.

Tom served honorably in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958. After his service, he joined the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, dedicating 36 years to the force and retiring in 1995 as Chief of Police. He was known for his courageous leadership and for introducing Community Policing to the city. His stories from the department, told with a signature sparkle in his eye, were equal parts thrilling and entertaining—beloved by family and colleagues alike.

A devoted Catholic, Tom spent a year in the seminary before pursuing other callings. He was an avid handball player for 35 years and picked up golf in retirement, enjoying weekly games with friends and family. He also gave generously of his time as a volunteer—serving more than a decade at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Menorah Hospital, Catholic Charities Food Pantry, and Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care. With the American Red Cross, he aided communities impacted by Hurricane Ike in Texas and Hurricane Sandy in upstate New York. In recent years, he served as a Eucharistic Minister at his parish, St. Michael the Archangel.

Family was the heart of Tom’s life. His devotion to his wife Mary, the love of his life, was inspiring to all who knew them. He adored his children and grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them. As a beloved leader of the “brother-in-law’s club,” Tom brought joy, camaraderie, and fun wherever he went. His infectious laugh and magnetic presence made him a cherished friend and confidant.

Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Dailey; his sisters, Patsy Kennedy, Joanne Leet, and Theresa Feden; and his parents, Joseph and Marie Dailey. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his children, Mark and Sandy Dailey, Joseph Dailey, and Maggie Kenefake; his grandchildren, Kate and Connor Stephens, Megan and Ben Robertson, Trey Kenefake, Thomas Kenefake, and Vivian Kenefake; and his great-granddaughter, Josie Stephens. He is also survived by his brothers, Patrick, Michael, and John Dailey, along with a large network of extended family and friends who will remember him for his kindness, humor, and the warmth he brought into their lives.

Services celebrating Tom’s life will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish in Leawood, Kansas. The Rosary will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, followed by visitation. The Funeral Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Carl's Cause, honoring Tom’s lifelong deep concern for others.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all his caregivers in the University of Kansas Health System, friends, and family who supported Tom and his family throughout the years.

My heart goes out to all of Tommy's family. He was truly one of a kind. Of all the people my Grandpa called friends Tommy Dailey was the most loyal and trustworthy. I grew up with a deep respect for Police Officers because of Tommy. He served the City for many years, he did it with pride and respect. He was always there for my family and I will always call the Dailey's my family. The amount of respect, appreciation, and heartfelt gratitude I will always carry with me cannot be put into words. The world is a better place because God blessed us with Chief Dailey! I know in my heart that Grandpa and Tommy are having a great time catching up after 30 years. I will always treasure the stories I have heard over the years. He was the definition of what a Man should be! I will forever be there for any of the family members. God Bless you Tommy. Thank you for being such an amazing blessing to the Bowers family. Love and condolences to all who loved him, Timmy Bowers.

Tom was my first police chief and was always kind. He is directly responsible for my police career and ultimately my retirement and i very much appreciate that. I often thought of him after his retirement and was fortunate to run into him a few times.May God bless him for his good works here on earth.

Mary Sue I never had a chance to converse with Tom but of course his obituary tells a life story of love. We all should be blessed and look to Tom as an inspiration in our lives. I am sure his children will garner his wisdom as time goes by. When we lose our spouses time crawls I firmly believe they stay close in a continuing love with a watchful presence. I have a mass commitment Wednesday and responsibilities for the feast of the Assumption Thursday and Friday. My prayer will be with you may the Holy Spirit hold the peace you shared in the love of your heart. Deacon Gary

Nobody could tell a story like Tom Dailey. My favorite is one involving an especially vicious dog during a police investigation. Beyond his penchant for storytelling, however, Tom was a kind and generous man. He was fun and funny, and his love for Mary was always obvious. When my husband and I adopted our youngest daughter (almost 30 years ago), he turned to me and said, "You have saved her life." She may have saved ours, as well, but I will always remember the serious look on his face when he said that. Grateful for his long life and happy times with Mary and their family. You ran a good race, Tom. I'm thinking you may have saved some lives along the way, too. Rest in peace.
