Jul 01, 1938---Feb 27, 2024

Andrew Aloysius Schieber, 85, passed away peacefully at Villa St. Francis on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.  He was surrounded by family.

Andrew was born on July 1, 1938, in Conception, MO.  He was the seventh of nine children of Lawrence and Eleanor (Lager) Schieber.

First and foremost, Andy lived his Catholic Christian faith his entire life.  Conception, Missouri is a strong Catholic community and Andy was baptized at the Benedictine Monastery in Conception, MO.  He was a long-time member of Queen of the Holy Rosary parish in Wea, KS and then St. Michael the Archangel parish in Leawood, KS.

Andy was involved in the Knights of Columbus, the Serra Club that promotes religious vocations, Christ Renews His Parish retreat ministry, and the Men of St. Michael.  He often attended daily Mass at St. Michael.  He also maintained a devotion to Mary throughout his life praying the rosary and making pilgrimage to Medjugorje and Lourdes.

After growing up on the farm, Andy went to college at St. Benedict’s in Atchison, KS and then transferred to K-State where he completed an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering.  He had a successful career as an electrical engineer designing coal-fire power plants at Lutz, Daily, & Brain Consulting Engineers in Overland Park, KS.

On August 11, 1965, Andy married Rita Stiens.  Andy lived his vocation to marriage well celebrating 58 years of marriage.  The fruit of their marriage was four children:  Leon, Fr. Brian, Tina, and Greg.  From his upbringing on the farm, Andy always loved gardening including a large vegetable garden, strawberry patch, blackberries, and roses.  He enjoyed sports including basketball, racquetball, ping pong and tennis.  He was competitive, especially playing board games and cards.

Andy was the beloved grandfather of 9 grandchildren:  Garrett, Gavin, Brooke, and Bryson Schieber, AJ and Austin Haney, and Heidi, Oliver, and Elijah Schieber, and  1 great grandchild Theodore Schieber.  They will miss breakfasts and visits with their grandpa.  In his retirement, Andy spent many hours in service to his family babysitting grandchildren and volunteering at Church.  He volunteered at Catholic Charities, promoted pro-life efforts, and continued his own spiritual growth through bible studies.  He also was an avid Bridge player.

These past months with stage 4 cancer, the love of God was particularly felt through the outpouring of prayer and support from the St. Michael community and Catholic Community Hospice.  Andy spiritually prepared himself by receiving confession, the sacrament of the sick and daily Communion.  He was truly ready to go home to the Lord.

Andy was proceeded in death by his parents Lawrence and Eleanor Schieber, and his siblings:  Frederick Schieber, Edward Schieber, and Beatrice Rogers.  Andrew is survived by his wife Rita and children:  Leon (Julee) Schieber, Fr. Brian Schieber, Tina Haney, and Greg (Abby) Schieber, and his brothers and sisters:  Lawrence Schieber, Agnes Welliver, Martin Schieber, Sr. Monica Schieber, and Martha (Doug) Copley.

A Vigil Prayer Service and the Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. followed by a visitation until 6 pm on Wednesday, March 6 at St. Michael the Archangel, 14251 Nall Ave., Leawood, KS. The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 7 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. The family burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Queen of the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Wea, Kansas. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic, 3021 N. 54th St., Kansas City, KS 66104 or Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, 9720 W. 87th St., Overland Park, KS 66212.

Friend ,Lenexa ,Kansas

I first met Andy at St. Michael's Church when I became a member of the Knights of Columbus. Andy was always such a kind and thoughtful friend and he always encouraged everyone he came in contact with! Andy always saw the best in everyone and I shall miss his kindness and his very generous spirit. His son, who is Father Brian Schieber, has been my wonderful Pastor for many years at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Leawood, Kansas. I enjoyed sitting at his table on several occasions at St. Michael's Church and once at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Wea when we attended a fund raising dinner. May Andy RIP and may his family aways know how much he was loved by so many friends across many years. And may his beloved Rita and their family know how much I personally admired and loved Andy! Family friend ,Leawood ,Kansas

Our family sends our condolences. Andy and Rita, Leon, Father Brian, Tina and Greg were our good friends and neighbors for over 40 years in Stilwell, Ks. So many wonderful memories of our children growing up together and neighborhood fun times. Andy was a warm, friendly man who was always smiling and positive, who loved his family and friends and above all, The Good Lord. His good friend and neighbor, Rufus, preceded him in going to be with the Lord in April 2023. He and Rita were so supportive to our family at that difficult time. May he rest in peace. I enjoyed making the acquaintance of Rita and Andrew Schieber when I breakfasted with them and other parishioners at Price Chopper after 7:30 am mass. Was surprised to learn that this nice couple were Fr. Brian‘s parents! Thankful for the gift they gave us all raising the wonderful son and parish priest.
