Jun 08, 1934---Aug 29, 2025

Beverly J. Fields, 91, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Friday, August 29 surrounded by immense love from her family and friends.  She is survived by her five boys Herbie, Jack (Lyn), Lee (Mindy), Edwin (Aramide) and Brian (Krestin), eleven grandkids, and two great-grandkids.  Beverly was predeceased by her loving parents Jonas and Minnie Barnett, her adorable siblings Irene, Wayne, Marvin, Pete and Barbara, and her cherished daughter Barbie.

Beverly was born on June 8, 1934 in Kansas City, Kansas (KCK) and grew up in the Armourdale neighborhood.  She lived in KCK her entire life except for a few years in Fort Riley, Kansas.  She graduated from Wyandotte High School and was the 1952 Homecoming Queen.  She also attended junior college and graduated from the University of Kansas with undergraduate and Master’s degrees.  Beverly taught elementary school in KCK for over thirty years.  She enjoyed nurturing and educating hundreds of the lucky students who got “Mrs. Fields’ class” during her teaching career.

But her most notable accomplishment was her starring role as Mom.  She performed that role brilliantly for 66 consecutive years.  In the Book of Great Moms, her kids believe she wrote Chapter One, “Delivering Unconditional Love, Guidance, and Support For the Rest of Your Life.”  Beverly was her kids’ role model and instilled their values.  She taught them essential life lessons, kindness, courage, and shaped their characters.  She helped her kids succeed by making them understand it is OK to fail.  And when one of them had a particularly good day in class, sports, or life, she would often say with a smile, “I like results.”  Beverly also made a big impact on her kids’ numerous friends, many of whom considered her their “second” Mom.  She was just that kind of lady.

She loved watching her kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events.  She cheered loud and proud at every event.  Even though she was not a world traveler, she went to many fun and interesting places, including Cuba in 1956 on a deluxe flight with her sister and friends.  She was happiest at home in comfy capris with her family and friends eating simple but good food.  She especially loved cheeseburgers, raw red onions, and Coke.  But she loved a juicy watermelon most of all, carving countless of them her entire life for her kids, family, and friends.  She taught her family the joy of spending quality time together, making jokes and laughing together.

Beverly was a devout Christian woman who enriched her family and friends with her kindness, generosity and love.

Visitation will be from 10-11:00 AM followed by the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM Tuesday, September 2, at Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS.  Burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Appl Orchard Hospice.

A great woman; a terrific mother; and, a wonderful neighbor. We had a very fun and close-knit neighborhood growing up and Mrs. Fields was one of the main reasons why. Rest in peace Beverly.

Sending my love to you all & thinking of all the family today especially. Wish I could be there to pay tribute to your amazing mum. So many happy memories of her, her warmth, her fun, her positive, loving nature & so much more. Walking into your home in the summer of 1976 was a revelation to me, all centered around wonderful Mrs Fields. I am so grateful for so many of the Christmas letters we exchanged since & in recent years our calls. She is reunited with Barbie & that warms my heart. She leaves a wonderful legacy.

I was so saddened to hear of Mrs. Fields’ passing. Growing up two doors down, I have such fond memories of running around the neighborhood with the Fields kids, going to school together, and always being welcomed at their home. Mrs. Fields had such a caring spirit—she let us play all day and always made us feel safe and loved. Though we all grew up and went our own ways, she remained in that same home, a constant presence in our neighborhood. I’m especially grateful that Mom and I were able to visit with her, share stories, and exchange hugs in her final months. She was truly a genuine sweetheart to the very end. My heart breaks for our dear friends—Herb, Jack, Lee, Eddie, and Brian—as you endure this loss. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you all. With love and deepest sympathy, The Strumillo Family
