Dorothy Mae Knudson passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family on October 7, 2026. Dorothy was born on September 3, 1930, in Tonganoxie, Kansas, to Esther (Ferris) and Earl Burroughs, She lived a beautiful life centered on love, devotion, and the family she cherished above all else.
In 1948, while working at a soda shop, Dorothy met the love of her life, Leonard Knudson. Their love story blossomed into a marriage that spanned 58 wonderful years and a family that became the heart of Dorothy’s world. Together, they had five children: James Leonard (Lenny), Dorothy Deanne, Robert (Bob), David, and Daniel.
Dorothy found her greatest joy in being at home, caring for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family was her world, and she devoted her life to making sure each of them felt loved, cared for, and welcomed. She had a special gift for turning a house into a home filled with warmth, comfort, and cherished memories.
One of Dorothy’s greatest pleasures was cooking for friends & family. Her holiday gatherings were treasured occasions, always filled with delicious homemade food, laughter, and an abundance of love. She had a way of bringing everyone together around the table, creating traditions and memories that her family will carry in their hearts forever.
Dorothy’s life was a testament to the beauty of a mother’s love and the quiet strength of a woman who gave so much of herself to others. She never needed grand gestures or recognition; her greatest happiness came from knowing her family was happy, healthy, and together. Her love was steady, her home was always a place of comfort, and her devotion to her family was unwavering.
Though her family will deeply miss her presence, the love she gave so freely will continue through the generations she nurtured. Her recipes, holiday traditions, and countless memories will serve as lasting reminders of a remarkable woman whose greatest legacy was the family she loved so dearly.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Leonard; their infant daughter, Dorothy Deanne; her great grandson, Kevin, as well as her parents and her three brothers- Lyle, Bobby and Lloyd.
She is survived by her four loving sons, James Leonard (Young), Bob (Pam), David, and Daniel; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Dorothy’s family takes comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with the loved ones who went before her. While saying goodbye is never easy, the family is forever grateful for the years they shared with her and the unconditional love she gave throughout her life.
Visitation is at 9:30 am with a Funeral Service at 10:30 am on Monday, October 12 at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, KS.
