James Munn Coopersmith, beloved husband, father (Papa), grandfather (Pere), and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12 at the age of 86, with his devoted wife, Toni, by his side.
Born on February 18, 1940 in Mount Vernon, New York, Jim lived a remarkable life with Toni, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful family and created a lifetime of memories filled with love and laughter.
Jim graduated from the United States Naval Academy and served his country as a naval aviator in the United States Navy, where he developed the discipline, leadership, and commitment to service that would guide him throughout his life. As a commissioned officer, he rose through the ranks and retired as a Captain in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he continued his passion for aviation as a pilot with Trans World Airlines (TWA).
In addition to his aviation career, Jim dedicated more than 40 years to helping others achieve financial security as a financial planner with Northwestern Mutual. Known for his wisdom, integrity, and genuine care for his clients, he built lasting relationships and made a meaningful difference in the lives of many families.
Above all, Jim treasured his family. He was an adoring husband, loving father, and proud grandfather who found his greatest joy in the people he loved. He led by example, showing kindness, generosity, and unwavering support throughout his life. Whether advising clients, sharing stories with friends, or chatting with a neighbor, Jim had a gift for making others feel valued and welcome.
Jim also found joy in life's finer details. He enjoyed tennis and had a deep appreciation for classical music, art, architecture, and design. He especially loved tending his yard and gardens, cultivating a place of beauty and comfort for family and friends.
He is survived by his cherished wife of 62 years, Toni Coopersmith; his children, Michael Coopersmith, Gabrielle Coopersmith, Kelly and Mike Markson, and Conrad and Lucia Coopersmith; his grandsons, Charlie and Matty Markson; and his extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Isabelle and Jacob Coopersmith, his sister, Edith Bennett, and his daughter, Camille Coopersmith.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the exceptional staff at A Caring Heart, whose compassion, dedication, and loving care brought comfort and dignity to Jim during his final years.
A visitation will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church on Monday, July 27, at 10 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 AM. At the conclusion of the Mass, military honors will be rendered in recognition of Jim's distinguished service as a United States Navy veteran.
To honor Jim's life and legacy of service, memorial contributions may be made to Kansas Special Olympics, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
