Mario F. (89) and Delia (85) passed away on December 25, 2020.   Mario was born in Matanzas, Cuba and Delia was born in Santa Clara, Cuba.

Mario was one of seven children born to Augusto (Justo) and Fabiana (Lucia) Madruga.  Delia was one of six children born to Rogelio and Josefa (Maita) Delgado.

Mario’s family moved to Havana in 1944 during WWII.  When he was 14 years old he traveled to Santa Clara to work with his uncles at the “Armazanes Colon" and "Armazenes Paris” clothing retail shops. While there, he met Delia. It was there, in Santa Clara, they started their courtship at the “carnaval” or fair.  They were engaged for five years when Mario left Cuba with his parents for the United States.  Mario and Delia were married by proxy on January 8, 1966.  On March 31, 1966, Mario and Delia were finally reunited in Miami, Florida.  They immediately made their journey to Kansas City, Kansas, where they established roots and started their family.

Mario worked at the Claycomo Ford Motor Company plant for 30 plus years.  He was a master gardener and a jack of all trades.  No home improvement project was out of reach for Mario.  Delia was the consummate homemaker. Delia was “Nanny” to many children throughout the years, she loved each and every one of them like her own.  Delia was known for her sense of style, no leopard print was off limits.

Mario and Delia lived the American dream. Their two children are the luckiest people for having been born of this union.  Mario and Delia showed the world their creative spirit when they named their children, Mario and Delia.  They were immensely proud of their children’s accomplishments and were absolutely the proudest of their two grandchildren, Brandon and Abbey.  They were surrounded by family this past week in ways that seem remarkable.  On Christmas morning, Brandon proposed to his lovely girlfriend, Kayla.  Mario and Delia were by God’s grace able to communicate (by Facetime, of course) their joy over the engagement.

Mario and Delia were cherished by their great big Cuban family, they were the cutest couple, together they traversed life’s challenges and together they entered the gates of Heaven.

Mario and Delia are survived by their daughter and her husband, Delia and Michael York of Kansas City, Kansas, their son Dr. Mario J. Madruga of Orlando, Florida, their grandson, Brandon York and granddaughter Abigail York, Mario’s brother, Manuel Madruga, sisters, Margot Castro, Mireya Leon, Noeida (Othoniel) Castro and Anolad  (Jose A.) deLeon, beloved nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. with a Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 416 North 14th Street, Kansas City, Kansas.

In Lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions can be sent to: PACES - of Kansas City Kansas 7840 Washington 66112, paceswc.org or PAL- Kansas City, Kansas Police Athletic League 800 N. 5th 66101, palkck.com

Mario, Delia and family, I can remember many a summer afternoon playing wiffle ball against the garage and your mom inviting me in for dinner since I had been there pretty much all day. Your mom and dad were so kind. They always made me feel at home. The obituary is correct. They were proud of their family. And they were proud of who they were and what they had in this world! When I would drive by their house in recent years I would always smile- the yard so meticulous. It would make me think of their generosity and beautiful nature. I am so sad that this tragedy occurred. Peace and love to you from all of my family. Be well!

Dear Delia & Mario. We are so sorry for your devastating loss. Growing up in Santa Clara, your dad was ever present in my life. His patient and doting ways with rambunctious little me; always running around the store, made me both respect and love him. As an I adult, I valued and admired his soft words of wisdom and love for family. He was our family 'historian'; telling us stories of my parents, my sister and I from years past..Your mom was lovely, stylish, and kind. I fondly remember her sweet smile. They complemented each other perfectly. God would have it that as they lived in love and faith on this earth, so together, they are now sharing the joys of Our Lord's Heavenly Kingdom. Along with my husband Carlos, and my children we send both of you, and our dear Kansas City family, our deepest condolences and love.

Mario and Delia, Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your parents. They were good people. Always smiling, always supportive. I remember how excited they were for Ginny and I when our son was born. The three of us walked by your parents home quite often and your dad would always stop us and make a fuss over the baby whenever he was outside. (Which was all time, working on his yard.) You are all in our prayers. God Bless.
