Mary Elaine Hay, 74, Shawnee, KS, passed away unexpectedly on March 19, 2021. Visitation will be held from 10:30- 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 26, at the Porter Funeral Home 8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. Mary was born August 22, 1946, in Kansas City, KS, the daughter of James and Marie Wicinski. Mary married her high school sweetheart, Charley, 54 years ago.

Mary led a very full life. She loved babies and children. She truly enjoyed spending time with and showering the young people in her family and neighborhood with special gifts. Mary and Charley were considered honorary grandparents to many children. Fishing was a favorite hobby, along with KU Basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs. She was a superstitious viewer loyal to particular outfits and seats. Mary was proud of her career as a top salesperson across several industries and her ties to KC theatre. She loved hosting parties and had a true gift for entertaining. The year’s most anticipated social event was the extended family Christmas Eve White Elephant party Mary and Charley hosted for many years. 

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brother Jim Wicinski, and sister Lisa Williams. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charley Hay, sisters Bonnie Osborn, Cynthia Austin, Kris Mulholland, Kate Wicinski, brother John Wicinski and her many beloved nieces and nephews. She was a unique and special wife, sister and aunt. Her memory will be cherished. The stars are shining a little bit brighter with Mary’s presence among them.

To Charley and Butch's family....what great memories I have of playing ball and attending high school with her. She was always a sweetheart. Me being an only child couldn't image life with a large family...but they were a great family...always such a happy group. Mary was such a lovely, beautiful person. Although I only got to interact with her a few times, she made a lasting impression with her kind, thoughtful, and caring spirit. She always had such sweet, encouraging words for me, and she was just full of life and love. I feel so blessed to have known her and experienced her kindness. Her inward beauty enhanced her already lovely outward beauty, and she truly was a person who loved without abandon. Maybe it seems strange for me to say such intimate things about someone I only interacted with a handful of times. But she was truly just that special. We will miss her dearly.
