Mary Julia “Julie” Treacy, 66, of Shawnee, Kansas passed away on June 22, 2026, at her home after a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
Julie was born in Kansas City, Missouri on October 5, 1959, to James and Rita (Coenen) Wallerstedt. Julie grew up in the Brookside area of Kansas City where she graduated from Bishop Hogan High School in 1978 and later graduated from Rockhurst University with a finance degree. Julie and her husband of 43 years, Dennis, were married on May, 28th 1983 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri.
Julie was a loving mother, successful entrepreneur and energetic go-getter. She raised five children while building an orthopedic device company with her husband. Whether it was golfing, fishing, hiking, traveling, playing cards, politics, coaching soccer or cheering on the Chiefs and Royals, Julie always took a keen interest in the hobbies of her husband and children. Some of her greatest joys in life came from hosting holiday gatherings and outings at the family cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Julie was competitive and quick on her feet, playing soccer with the same group of friends for nearly 40 years. Friends and family affectionately knew her as “Speedy J.” Not only was she fast on the field, but when a problem presented itself, Julie was quick to confront any challenge.
Julie’s devotion extended well beyond her children and granddaughters. She exuded a quiet strength that inspired those around her. She was a caregiver to her mother through nearly a decade of dementia, and to her sister, who battled Parkinson’s Disease. Julie was known as an attentive and thoughtful friend to many. She appreciated that the love and devotion she shared throughout her life was returned to her during her battle with ALS. Sustained by her Catholic faith, Julie drew great comfort and strength from the prayers offered on her behalf, and she was profoundly grateful for them. The family would like to thank Ashley, Veronica, Lorena, Jennifer, Lynn, Lee, Dr. Ren, Molly and Bonnie for their compassionate care and loving support throughout Julie’s illness.
Julie is preceded in death by her parents (James and Rita), brothers (Jimmy, Joel and John) and sister (Mary Jo). Julie is survived by her husband (Dennis), Children (Tom, Mike (Laura), Mark (Megan), Laura and Maureen) Granddaughters (Kate, Vivian, Maggie and Julia) and Sisters (Jan and Jean). Julie’s warmth and uplifting spirit will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa on July 9th. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30. Following services, the Treacy’s invite their friends and family to celebrate Julie’s life and watch the World Cup at Barley’s Kitchen + Tap in Shawnee from 2:30 – 5:30.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions in memory of Julie Treacy to the Dean’s Catalytic Fund at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine to support their ongoing ALS research.
