Philip Michael Woodworth, 72, Lenexa, KS, passed away Sunday, March 21, 2021 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was born March 15, 1949 in Bentonville, Arkansas, the son of Raymond and Frances Woodworth. Much of his childhood was spent in rural Kansas where he cultivated a strong work ethic. He spoke fondly of his time in Tribune, KS and was proud to be a Greeley County High School Jackrabbit.
While attending Kansas State University, Phil met the love of his life, Amy Adair Laughlin. The two were married in 1971 and first lived in Hutchinson, KS. They later moved to Prairie Village, KS and finally settled in Lenexa, KS where they would build their life together. Their family was complete with the addition of two daughters, Jill and Lisa, whom he adored.
With a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from Kansas State University, Phil spent his career in computer operations management. He enjoyed his work, and although it occupied much of his time - which he freely gave - some of his favorite times were spent enjoying life’s simple pleasures: a walk with Amy, a chocolate malt, a jigsaw puzzle, a cuddle on the couch with grandsons who lit up his life.
In his leisure time, Phil could often be found reading a book, listening to oldies music, cheering on the KSU Wildcats, solving word puzzles, or catching a quick Sunday morning nap in the choir loft. (He swears he was just resting his eyes.)
Phil treasured time with his family and looked forward to annual road trips to national parks and landmarks across the country. While others might prefer to spend an entire day at the beach, Phil wanted to experience and learn as much as he could. (He loved a detailed itinerary.)
In many regards, Phil had an “all in” mentality. There was no questioning his love for K-State. Purple was abundantly featured in his wardrobe (and rightly so, according to him). He was committed to his church and answered yes to every call to service. He was moved to donate blood and over his lifetime donated 91 units (11 gallons) through the Community Blood Center. He exemplified what it means to honor commitments: to God, to family, to friends.
Phil was the most kind and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His desk may have been messy, but his priorities were well-organized. His life was enriched and given meaning through his faith in God. He was generous with his time for his family, friends, church, and community. He loved and was loved deeply.
Phil is survived by his wife, Amy; daughters, Jill Nachtrab (Jason) and Lisa Smith (Jeremy); grandsons, Logan, Liam, and Meyer Nachtrab and Carter and Isaac Smith; brother, Tom Woodworth (Mary); sister, Jolene Ekstrum (Benny); aunt, Charlotte Woodworth; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Frances Woodworth.
A private family service will be held at The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Overland Park on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 2:00 pm. A live stream of the service will be available at cor.org/overlandpark/memorialsonline/
