Jul 25, 1934---Jul 25, 2025

Rev. Wayne G. Castle passed into heaven on his 91st birthday July 25, 2025 at Advent Shawnee Mission Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and daughter. He was born at home on July 25, 1934 to Marvin and Bernice (Decker) Castle at Saffordvilte KS. Wayne spent his growing up years in Holton and Coffeyville KS, and graduated from Holton High School. After high school he attended Baker University and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Agriculture. He always  wanted to be an Agricultural missionary. He went on to St. Paul School of theology where he received his Master of Divinity and began serving churches at the age of 19. He married Lorene Gibbens in 1961 and Gordon and Beth were born to this marriage. Wayne served over 25 churches over his career.

On December 28, 1975 he married Margaret (Margee) Bergosh with her son Tony. In 1978 they purchased Foreign Cars Unlimited, a foreign car salvage and parts business in Wichita. Wayne served the Sedgwick UMC and ran the salvage yard at the same time for 10 years. In 1988 he was called to serve the Trinity UMC in KCK and sold the business to his manager.

Wayne loved cars from an early age and always wanted to fix or improve the cars. He was dubbed "the Soul Salvager". Wayne loved being on the water, and boating and water skiing. They owned several lake homes over the years and taught many youth from various churches how to water ski.

Wayne is survived by his wife Margee, son Gordon {Nancy}, daughter Beth (Bob) and Stepson Tony (Crista). He loved his 9 grandchildren so much. His sister Nancy (Gerry} also survives.

I remember Wayne when he first came to Hiawatha and we were in the old church - and he transitioned us into the new church. He officiated my grandpa's funeral. Wayne brought new breath and life into the Methodist church by his appeal to the young and obvious desire to serve the youth. His children's service that was so touching, relevant, and above all else, really cute and bringing teens and young adults into the church. He was one of a kind and I'm honestly not sure if there was anyone after him that was quite the same. I hadn't seen him for years, but, I'm sorry he is gone - but he certainly had a well lived 'life'. Peace to all who loved him.

Having known Wayne at different times and in different situations, my memory of him will always be that he was a servant of Christ who was clear about his calling in ministry and followed it faithfully. Blessings to all his family and friends. May you know the comfort of the Holy Spirit through the grace and love of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Friend ,Parkville ,Missouri

Wayne was a neighbor and pastor of First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, Ks. when we moved there in 1970. Because he was our friend, pastor, and in dire need I was convinced I could take on a new vocation as secretary of the church. Only two hours a day I was told. It grew over time to four or more!. He moved in a few years and later so did we, but the friendship endured. We met for lunch with Margee and Wayne many times and Wayne preached at Ft. Leavenworth Cemetery when my husband was buried. Many good memories. Prayers are with Margee and the family!

Colleagues in Ministry ,Emporia ,Kansas

Wayne was at First UMC in Lawrence while i was the Kansas University campus minister. We had deep personal conversations that fed each other's spiritual needs. Cooperated on some church-university events. He was valued, rrspected, and kind. I am grateful we crossed paths in our journeys.

Methodist Church ,Olathe ,Kansas

To the family, In 1957 I Lived in Centralia, KS and was chosen with another girl whose name I can not remember to attend a national Methodist Youth conference at Mt. Sequoyah, Arkansas. Someone arranged for us to ride to Arkansas with Wayne who was living in Holton and was about 6 years older than us. He had a new VW Bug and we would turn on the lights, honk the horn, and wave if we met another Bug because there were not many Bugs sold in the US at that time. It was a wonderful, awe inspiring week and after a safe trip home I never saw him again, but I always remembered his name and his VW Bug. My sympathy to all of you. Nancy Boston

Husband of Wayne's cousin Bette ,Holladay ,Utah

Wayne will be missed by many, but not many more than the Decker cousins that Wayne and Margee brought together every few years in Kansas, KC and NYC. I'm attaching a couple of my favorite pictures, one of all the Decker cousins together at Red Rock Ranch (Wayne, Sara, Georgia, Nancy and Bette, seated) and MOMA in NYC August 2018 (Wayne on the far right behind his brother Wendell's sculpture).

Wayne was the first person who suggested that I needed to consider entering into the professional ministry. I was 14 at the time. He has always been one of my most cherished and trusted mentors. His wisdom and gentle nature were always appreciated.
