Sharon Eileen Filip, born August 14, 1969, in Chicago, Illinois to Alan and Janet (Stratton) Filip, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, surrounded by her family at Saint Luke’s Hospice House.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents. She is lovingly survived by her sisters, Jennifer (Rick), Becky (Damon), and Mary (Harley); her nieces and nephews, Hannah, Jacob, Molly, Emily, and Henry; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who were like family.
Those who knew Sharon will remember her grit, tenacity, kindness, and unforgettable laugh. Her life was marked by significant and often harrowing health challenges, yet to everyone she met, it was undeniable that she was a fighter with a spirit built on perseverance. Sharon was a fierce advocate for disability rights. Having overcome many obstacles and barriers in her own journey, she became a champion for equality and inclusion for all.
Known as “Shaus” to most of her family, Sharon had a deeply giving spirit. Whether for a birthday, Christmas, or another special occasion, she devoted considerable time to thoughtfully planning—and often handcrafting—the perfect gift. Like her parents, her greatest joy was found in giving. Shaus cherished family gatherings and traditions, especially the annual bake day. Each year she made her famous rum balls, inspiring the family joke that there was more rum in Shaus than in the cookies.
In addition to her human family, Sharon dearly loved her pets—especially her kitties. Having grown up with dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and even birds, she had a heart for all animals. Most recently, she adored her beloved snuggle companion, Abby.
A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held on Friday, March 20, at Old Shawnee Town Chapel (11501 W. 57th Street, Shawnee, KS 66203). The memorial service will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed immediately by dinner in the Old Shawnee Town Hall.
An additional Celebration of Life will be held in Chicago on April 4, with location details to be announced.
