After a long health battle, Theodore Michael (Mike) Classen passed away on April 13, 2025. Beloved husband of Brenda (Lonberger)Classen and loving father to Heather and father-in-law to Ray. Predeceased by his parents Theodore and Bertha and brother David. He will be deeply missed by his brother Ron (Nell).
Born and raised in Charleston, Arkansas, Mike was the oldest of three boys. He played baseball and football, but science captured his interest as well. He earned 4 degrees, including his doctorate in physical chemistry. That skill took him to Wichita, Kansas where he met and married the love of his life, Brenda. Brenda came with a package deal, her daughter Heather. Mike adopted her as his daughter in 1984.
Mike was a quiet person, but when he spoke, it was often important or funny. He had 3 loves of his life – his family, his dogs, and chocolate. He was passionate about nature, often taking his family on camping and hiking trips in their young years and planting large gardens.
He valued education and his beloved University of Arkansas. He could always be found watching the Royals, the Chiefs, and all the mystery or Star Trek shows he could find. Mike retired in 2011. He enjoyed being a retiree, frequently meeting his friends for morning coffee.
He and Brenda often went to Canada to spend time with Heather and Ray. The four would enjoy many day trips to museums or gardens in the area, but Mike also enjoyed spending hours watching Big Bang Theory with Ray.
In 2016 Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It changed his life, specifically his mobility and his memory, but if you’d ask how he was doing, you would still get a, “just fine” stoic response. His optimism about his condition stayed with him right to the very end.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parkinsons Foundation.
On Saturday, April 26th, there will be a visitation from 10:30 to 11:00am, followed by the funeral service and a luncheon. This will be held at the Church of the Resurrection Overland Park, 8412 W. 95th St., Overland Park.
