THERESE MARIE (MASTERSON) JOHNSON

August 14, 1955 – August 19, 2023

Therese passed away peacefully at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. She is survived by her husband Steve, two sons, David and Michael, three daughters and eight grandchildren, Katie (Josh) Dupy, Adelyn, Francie, Josie; Kristine (Theo) Zecy; Henry, Isabel and Colleen (Bill) Franke; Eli, Lydia, Lucy.

Therese is survived by three brothers: John (Susy), Joseph, Mickey (Xenia). She is survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: David (Polly), Daniel (Virginia), Matt (Mia) and Lisa (Greg) Schlatter as well as more than 20 nieces and nephews. She is survived by her aunts Norma Masterson and Ann Masterson and father-in-law Lee Johnson (Judy) and many, many cousins. She was proceeded in death by parents Tom and Maryhelen (Dixon) Masterson, her mother-in-law Janet Johnson and sister-in-law Suzi.

Therese grew up in Prairie Village and attended St. Ann’s School and St. Teresa’s Academy.  She continued her education at Benedictine College and graduated with an education degree from Kansas University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Therese and Steve married on August 24, 1979, and raised their five children in Overland Park where Therese was active at The Church of the Ascension as a Eucharistic Minister, a teacher in the CCD program and sponsor for more than ten youth as they prepared for the sacrament of confirmation.     She was also a substitute teacher in the Olathe School District and worked for several years in the     after-school programs at Prince of Peace in Olathe and Queen of the Holy Rosary.

Therese loved her dogs (no leash please!), she loved to run and play tennis. She taught all her kids how to play tennis. She enjoyed ALL social events where she engaged with everyone present and never left without many new friends. She was a friend to all and loved by so many. Therese was a stay-at-home mom while the kids were young. She served as room mom for each of the children for multiple years. She served on the parents’ social committees at St. Thomas Aquinas for at least eight years and never missed a Mother-Son Dance.

She was an original “cool mom” and often enjoyed “TPing” with the kids, surprise “fire drills” at red lights and had silly string with balloons for any special occasion. Her husband Steve knew he had ‘married up’ when she said, “Yes” to his proposal. They went on to share 44 years of marriage with so much gratitude for God’s blessing on their family.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff and friends at Goshen Homes and Ascend Hospice for the wonderful care and love provided to Therese over the past year. They are special people.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 24th, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS. The family will hold an additional visitation at 9:00 a.m. with a Rosary prayed before the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 25th, at Church of the Ascension, 9510 W. 127th St. Overland Park, KS. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: St. Thomas Aquinas in memory of Therese. Click here to donate

The family will have a Celebration of Life reception in the Parish Hall at Ascension Church lower level beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. This will be a casual time to celebrate Therese and share stories with family and friends. Light snacks, drinks and adult beverages will be provided.

Mrs. Johnson was a great parent for her kids. She gave direct, a sense of fun, support and told it like it was. One of my favorite parents in all my years teaching. She will be in my litany of the Saints. Coach Greg Wilson

Steve and Therese, Rodney and Donna Olson and Ruth and I spent our early marriage years (before Kids) pretty much inseparable, whether playing softball, golfing or traveling together, be it North Carolina, Washington DC, The Ozarks or wherever. Usually all staying in 1 motel room. (Another story another time). We will miss her humor and bright outlook. Steve and Therese were true friends and Ruth and I will feel the loss. deeply. We know she is finally at peace after a long struggle, and we send our condolences to Steve and the family. Blessings

Therese was an amazing woman and friend. It was a blessing to have the opportunity to care for Therese. I will never forget the time I took Therese out for ice cream, then she decided she didn’t want it and smeared it all over my car! Therese was loved and will truly be missed.

I will miss Therese greatly. We have been best friends since 1974 when we met at KU in our first Education class. Therese and I took all our classes together as she always copied my schedule exactly. She was always so much fun and a true friend. I loved staying at her home with her folks when we were in college. I was blessed to be her maid of honor at her wedding. I still remember her calling home the day after her wedding to check in with her folks and me. I will miss you greatly my dear friend. I know you are with God and your parents. Love you forever and always!!

The last two times I saw Therese when visiting her at the home care I knew my dear friend already had started moving home. I’m happy for her now she is dancing and running with a new healthy body and yes Buddy and Charlie on either side. Therese was a whirlwind of energy and fun, but even more of kindness I cherish my memories with my friend. My heart goes out to her family losing this very special lady

Therese made a lasting contribution to our sorority. Her laughter and positive attitude inspired us all. She was a joy to be around. I am so glad she was able to attend our March DDD party a few years ago. It was great seeing her. I sent her composite picture from 1974. We will always remember her.

Susan & I both have holes in our hearts with her passing. She taught so many things without even trying... being joyful, knowing life occurs in the moment, that caring is an honor, not an obligation, and that life is full of a million reasons to smile and none to complain about. I will never pet a dog again and not think of the smile on her face.

THERESE, You righted my world, when, after taking pity on a forlorn bachelor, you set me up with a terrific blind date. Your eloquence in evaluating my situation was eclipsed only by your elegance in talking me down from my depression. It was never about you, but those around you, as many will testify. Your reeked of love and laughter and lightheartedness. You left a lasting impression on all whose lives you touched. Blessings to you and yours as you continue to lift up those in need in the Heavenly Abode Above. Your Number 1 Rammin' Rhino FAN, JAMIE HOUSTON COL (R), US ARMY Serving to Heal Honored to Serve

I was fortunate Therese was a room parent my first year as a teacher. She was very supportive and always willing to help me and the kids in the class. Many years later, I would be fortunate to see her during mass at Queen of The Holy Rosary. What a blessing it was for me to share in the celebration of The Holy Eucharist with her around Our Lord’s alter.

I got to know Therese through our daughters, they played volleyball together. Therese and I would cheer the girls on to a CYA all city victory when the girls were in high school. We then went with the group to Mexico for senior spring break. Let's just say what happened on the catamaran stays on the catamaran. Therese you will be missed. Thank you for the memories and the laughter!. Charlene Kupersmith

When I think of Therese, friend of 25 years, so many memories and fun times run through my mind. Our daughters became close friends in high school and Therese and I tried to keep up with them best we could! Cool mom she was!! Many different adjectives come to my mind when describing Therese: fun, spontaneous, full of energy, hilarious.... but, the most important ones were loving, giving and faith filled. Those were deep rooted in her. In these later months when visiting her in hospice with another friend of Therese's, I saw those descriptors still deep in her person. She was often quiet, sometimes agitated, maybe confused by our recounting of events together...but she calmed at Jeanie's suggestion of prayer. When we prayed the rosary with her, she was present with each prayer. I know her heart and mind understood those rote prayers that had been part of her faith life for 60+ years. She quieted and a calmness and peace came over her as we prayed. Steve and family...that calmness and peace is there eternally for your amazing wife and mother. She is with you always and no doubt she is entertaining someone in heaven with her wit, energy and spirit. God bless you Steve and family.

Therese was a beacon of light. She was a joy to be around. We danced together at many Mother/Son dances and always had a blast. We spent many hours doing mailings for the Aquinas Mom’s club. I am very sorry for your loss. Therese was a kind, loving and fun person!

A Poem to the Family: "The Dash" "I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend He referred to the dates on the tombstone From the beginning...to the end. He noted that first came the date of birth And spoke the following date with tears, But he said what mattered most of all Was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time That they spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved them Know what that little line is worth." **Love and Blessings to our wonderful friends & neighbors for so many years. Thank you very much for your warmth and kindness. Condolences on the loss of such an Awesome woman named, Therese! We miss you guys and our prayers are with you all.
