Apr 08, 1997---Jan 14, 2020

Layne Rebecca Mays, daughter of Kevin and Tamra Mays, was born on April 8, 1997 in Overland Park, Kansas.  She passed away on January 14, 2020.

While studying at Kansas State University, Layne enjoyed riding on the equestrian team and various artistic endeavors.  Layne saw much success as a rider on the equestrian team, but most loved her deep bonds with her horses, Austin and Linus.  Layne was also a talented cellist and painter — especially fond of recreating scenes from films by Walt Disney.

Layne is survived by her sister Chloe, brother Parker, and parents Kevin and Tamra.  As well as her beloved cat Ariel and horse Austin.  The family invites you to celebrate Layne’s wonderful life during a Vigil Service on Friday, January 17 at 6:00pm and Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 18 at 1:30pm.  Both services will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish.

Layne would like us all to remember her with the following quote she so cherished: “Family, where life begins, and love never ends”.

I am so sorry for this families loss & I extend my prayers and thoughts towards the Mays family. Layne was truly the most kindest, genuine, positively amazing teammate the KSU IHSA team could all ask for. As a team captain she fulfilled her role to the max making sure everyone was taken care of. She never failed to uplift everyone’s spirits and was a key factor in making our team come together as one. Our long road-trips together to horse shows on the weekends are so memorable to me. She made my first year here in Kansas one of the most happy and pleasurable times of my life. Besides being an amazing teammate she was an awesome friend. Her friendship meant a lot since she was always willing to give out advice and give positive feedback to me. Layne was absolutely loved by everyone she interacted with and i’m so glad I was able to share some amazing memories together that are unforgettable. Once again my prayers and thoughts are always with the Mays family and if there is anything I can do to help out during this painful time, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me .

I can't express the sorrow I feel over this tragic loss and for the many people who love Layne. Layne's mother Tamara is good friends with my mom and I used to hang out with Layne when we were kids. I still remember what a vibrant, kind, and special soul she was and how much joy she brought to so many people. My heart aches for her family and I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers.

While Layne and I have not stayed in touch since our days at Blue Valley West, the only memories that I have of her are ones of joy, happiness, and bliss. In high school, we were in the same group for several dances and we saw each other every other day in orchestra class. She was the one to always lighten the mood and make someone smile when life was tough. She had life in her eyes and passion in her intentions. Huge condolences to the Mays family. I pray for you, I’m there for you, and most importantly, if you need anything, please reach out. Times like these are when we need each other.

It is with my deepest sympathy that I am writing you these condolences. My daughter, Julie Pickering was Layne's riding instructor for many of Layne's formative years. Julie was in shock when she called me about what happened to your beloved daughter. We are a family of believers in Jesus Christ and know that He alone can comfort during our most intense sorrows. Your family is in our hearts and prayers not just with our family, but with a vast network of believers that we know across the United States. Most of us don't and will never know the grief and pain that your family is having to bear now. There is one who does, "The man of sorrows, well acquainted with grief". Jesus alone will help comfort you and with time and love, help to heal your pain. With love & prayers in your time of sorrow, Peggy Pickering

I can not begin to express my deep sincere sorrow over your loss of actually not one, but two, children in many ways. I can only imagine the depth of pain felt in your hearts. As I have told many grieving families over the years, my best advice for you is the following-- think of 5 memories for each child that makes you really smile or giggle when you think of that memory of them. Think of those 5 memories frequently, for the more often you think of them, the fresher they will remain in your heart and mind. No one can ever take your 5 special chosen memories from you. When times are tough or you feel like crying or you are having a particularly bad day, pop one of those memories into your brain and it will quickly improve the outcome and turn the situation around. Those 5 memories will always help carry you through. The hurt and pain will still be there, but the edge will be softened just enough to help you. Think of them often. The 5 memories can never be thought about too much! My heart and prayers are with you. If you every need an ear to listen, a heart to cry to...I'm here always...24/7!

Mays family, There are no words that can truly express my sorrow. I remember all the Mays kids fondly as they moved through the halls of LKMS and my classroom. Your beautiful Layne was such a gift; Her face would light up when she talked about horses and her love of animals. Her passing touched us all at Lakewood and she will be missed. Our world lost a special young woman. My prayers go out to you all. May you find strength and peace knowing how many people Layne impacted with her grace and kindness. My deepest sympathies, Jennifer Tavernaro

Mays Family, I first met Layne when she moved into the apartment complex I manage here in Manhattan. Although I didn't know your daughter, sister, friend on a personal level. She will be missed! The first time I met her, she had her eye shadow done resembling the Lion King sunrise. The Lion King is my favorite movie and I couldn't believe the time and attention to detail she took to do her make-up. She always carried a big smile and passed it along to others. Praying for your entire family at this time.
