On December 26, Dorothy (Dot) Cooksey, loving mother of two children and three grandchildren, passed away at the age of 89. Dot was born on February 16, 1931 to Rudolph and Laura Sexton. She was raised in Kansas City, Kansas and had one brother, Jack Sexton. Dorothy grew up in Armourdale and went to Argentine High School in Kansas City, Kansas. She married the love of her life, Jim Cooksey on April 16, 1955. They raised two daughters, Cathy and Susan.
Dorothy was very close to all of her family and many friends from throughout her life, including her many cousins in the Lindsey family, as well as childhood friends, friends from her sorority and great neighbors. Other than spending time with family and friends, Dot’s passions were cooking, shopping, and traveling. Her brisket, baked beans, chocolate sheet cake, apple dumplings and many cookies and desserts were legendary at family gatherings and her recipes will be enjoyed by generations to come.
Dorothy loved trying new restaurants with friends and family, was a voracious reader and traveled with Jim across Europe when he worked in the North Sea in Norway. She loved to visit friends and family across the country. One of Dorothy’s favorite delights was discovering some of Kansas City’s best bargains for friends and family. Dorothy faced numerous health challenges in recent years, but was always interested in hearing the latest updates from her cousins, children, grandchildren and friends.
Dot was preceded in death by her father, Rudolph, her mother, Laura, her brother, Jack and her loving husband of 63 years, Jim in 2019. She is survived by her two daughters and their families, Cathy and Mike Brenk of Tomball, Texas, and their daughter, Alexandra Brenk, of Laredo, Texas and Susan and Buster Cantrell of Lenexa, Kansas and their two sons, Ryan Cantrell of Ridgecrest, California and Drew Cantrell who is attending Oklahoma State University.
Due to the current COVID risk, the gravesite service will be for immediate family only on Wednesday, December 30th.
