Mar 22, 1929---Oct 04, 2021

Maxine A. (Kubal) Montgomery passed away in the home on Monday, October 4, 2021. On March 22, 1929, Maxine was born in Geddes, SD, to Sophia (Dufek) & Thomas Kubal.

After attending business school in Sioux City, IA, Maxine worked at the courthouse and credit union before moving to Rapid City, SD, in 1955. There she met William F. Montgomery (Monk), a young serviceman from Chillicothe, OH. They were married in 1957 and lived a marriage of example for their six children: Teresa (John) Ahrens, Scott Montgomery, Tim (Christine) Montgomery, Dean (Sandra) Montgomery, Monte (Lin+) Montgomery, and Gina (Doug) McDonald. When Monk was transferred to Offutt AFB in 1967, the family moved into their first home in  Council Bluff, IA. In 1996, Maxine & Monk moved to Overland Park, KS, close to their daughters and grandchildren.

Happiest when home with her family, Maxine was a devoted mother, fabulous cook, puzzler, seamstress, listener, and source of unconditional love. Maxine & Monk enjoyed watching their children find the loves of their lives and experiencing the joy of grandparenting: 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. Maxine is also survived by her beloved sister, Donna Fennel of North  Sioux City, SD, sisters-in-law, Marge French, Delores Kubal, Evelyn Beck, brother-in-law, John Montgomery, and several nieces and nephews.

Maxine will be remembered for her giant smile, especially by her many caregivers over the last several years. After experiencing a stroke that severely limited her mobility and resulted in almost non-existent speech, Maxine lived with and was beautifully cared for by her youngest daughter &  family. She moved to Fort Atkinson, WI, with them in 2011 and enjoyed watching Thomas, Dustin & Cole grow up and entertain her with typical boy antics. She accepted her plight with grace and thrived due to the love and care of the McDonald family for the last 12 years.

Services are on Saturday, October 9 at Church of the Ascension, preceded by a rosary at 10 a.m.  Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetary. Memorials donations may be made to Marquardt Hospice, 1045 Hill Street, Watertown, WI 53098.

I loved Maxine! She was the first person out of the family I met, and she accepted me with open arms. I’m sure her and Bill are having a great reunion in Heaven!
