May 09, 1951---Oct 13, 2021

Iris was born on May 9, 1951 in Pratt Kansas to Marjorie and Willard Davis and spent her early years in Hutchison along with her younger brother, Randy. Her father made a career change and opened a barber shop in Larned, Kansas where she spent her teenage years. She went on to complete a Medical Technology degree program at Kansas State University. She worked for almost 25 years at Research Hospital where she “found my people” and made many long-time friendships.

Raised Baptist, she converted to Catholicism the year before she married. Faith was important to Iris, and she has always embodied core values of unconditional love, kindness and generosity. She later started a vacation bible school program at St. Agnes with her good friend, Vicki Ross. Ralph and Iris married on May 21, 1977 and were devoted to each other for 44 years and are proud parents of two wonderful children, Mary and Andy.

Fearing that technology was going to eliminate her job, she returned to school for a Master’s in Education at UMKC while continuing to work and raise two young children. She found the ideal teaching position at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. She taught Biology and Chemistry with an unparalleled ability to engross her students, which typically involved interpretive dancing and an infectious exuberance. She spent 20 years there earning a number of awards, including the Marian Award. She was driven to reach every student and inspire a love for science. A number of students have written to her years later to thank her and describe how she had influenced their lives and career. She was also a devoted grandmother to Lena and Weston Flournoy and Alden, Mason, and Imogen Lemberg. She shared her lifelong love of reading with them, played endless games, and celebrated their milestones. A teacher never truly retires and she spent a year and a half with Alden as his online teacher/learning coach during COVID.

Anyone who has known Iris recognizes her life has been a bright star, giving kindness, warmth and love to everyone around her. In lieu of flowers, please make gifts to a scholarship in Honor of Iris Flournoy  (http://tiny.cc/IrisFlournoy or https://tinyurl.com/IrisFlournoy).

Funeral service and tribute will be held at Porter Funeral Homes (8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS 66215) this Saturday, October 16, at 9 a.m. with inurnment immediately following across the street at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

I was so sorry to hear of Iris's passing. When her family moved to Larned, she lived a block away from my family (The Houf's.) We became friends and her family belonged to the same Baptist church as my family. She was a member of my wedding.

Iris was a kind soul who nurtured her students educational interests. She recognized potential and helped them see possibilities for their futures. Iris was intentional in her care of others. And she always had a ready smile and welcoming hello if you met her in the hallway here at school.

I'm so honored to have known Iris. She was always smiling and friendly, having kind words to say. Seeing the relationship she had with her mother, Iris, was something I admired. She will be missed. My heart and prayers go out to Ralph and her children. God Bless.

She was my favorite teacher. Her passion for both biology and chemistry was completely contagious. She was also just a caring educator and a huge cheerleader for anyone wanting to learn more about her interests. I know that she influenced many students. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Iris was an exceptional teacher at Aquinas. Loved to work with her as students applied to college and she frequently wrote incredible letters of recommendation for them. She inspired so many kids to continue to learn about science and create careers in many different science related areas. One of my favorite times in her classroom was when we had the Papa John’s scholarship recipient in her class. She Went along with the trick for the students when the Papa John’s manager Would present a bill for over $300 to the scholarship winner. Iris would act outraged that a student would order that much pizza and deliver it to her classroom for lunch. When the student opened up the box they saw that they had a college scholarship instead of the pizza. Her classroom was always engaged and the students loved being a part of that energy. She will be greatly missed. Prayers are for all of her family.

I had the great pleasure of working for many years with Iris at Research medical center in the microbiology lab. She was a wonderful coworker… Always upbeat and willing to help out with anything that needed to be done. And then later I had a daughter at Aquinas so I was able to see Iris in her teaching mode! It was truly her calling to be a science teacher! She obviously loved what she was doing and passed the love of science to her students. She was a lovely petson

So sorry to hear. Iris was such a warm and friendly person who will be so sorely missed. We all watched her family grow over the years at the 10 o'clock Sunday mass at St. Agnes, which was a real joy to all of us. My prayers for Ralph, Mary, Andy and their children. You were very blessed to have iris as your Mom and grandma.

Ralph, I am now hooked into Wes’ emails and just happened to read Bob Steiert’s newsletter this evening. I cannot tell you how profoundly saddened I am. We are returning from Florida on Sat, so will be unable to attend Irise’s service. I was thinking about the two of you recently. Iris is one of the nicest people I’ve ever known. I know you will miss her immensely. Your love and devotion was obvious to anyone that ever saw you together.

Iris was my fearless Science Department Head, my esteemed colleague, and best of all, she was my dear friend. I love teaching the STEM fields but Iris is the Queen of STEM. Her passion for STEM is knows no bounds. I admire her greatly as a person and as an educator. She loves her family sacrificially and they truly adore her. Enter into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father, Iris. I know you are dancing on the streets of gold!

As a long time educator at Bishop Miege I would see Iris at various educational events. I was also her niece’s guidance counselor at Miege. I loved her smile and effervescence! She always drove Sister Martina, a long time AP Biology teacher at Miege to AP and science events. I know Sister Martina and her were very close at their parish of St. Agnes as well. Iris was a good woman, teacher, and friend. My sincerest condolences on your profound loss.

Mrs. Flournoy was a truly dedicated and inspired teacher during my time at St. Thomas Aquinas. You could tell she enjoyed her time in the classroom sharing her passion with us. She is the reason I still remember the periodic table of elements. She also worked with my father for many years at Research Hospital and he always had high regards for Mrs. Flournoy. Our condolences to her family and friends.
