Apr 14, 1952---Nov 29, 2021

Paul Richard MacDonald, 69, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend died November 29, 2021 in De Soto, KS.  A private family service was held on Friday, December 3 at Porter Funeral Home in Lenexa, KS.  Paul’s family expresses their profound gratitude for everyone’s outpouring of love and support, during this time of sorrow.  As Paul would wish, the family asks for memorial contributions to be made to Catholic Central High School or Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation.

Paul was many things to many people, but for those closest to him he was beloved.

He was a beloved MacDonald Son.  On April 14, 1952, Paul was born in the heart of Detroit, Michigan, to a large and vibrant family.  As the third of seven children, Paul played a central role in the life of his family.  Always the showman, the young Paul was a musician, a drum major, and, occasionally, the mastermind of elaborate and hilarious pranks.  Paul was devoted to his mother and dearly loved his brothers and sisters, drawing his strength from their foundational bond.

He was a beloved Dad and Papa. Paul stepped into fatherhood at a young age.  Raising four daughters is not a task for the faint of heart, and Paul not only willingly took up the task but embraced it with all his might.  An imposing man of height, with a thick mane of hair often paired with a full beard, Paul was the image of a protector and provider.  However, his children and grandchildren were granted access to the soft side of Paul.  Whether he was spending hours looking for the perfect prom dress or on the golf course helping to find a perfect swing or in the shop teaching all things cars, Paul’s love for his family was undeniable.  Traveling and experiencing the world was especially important to Paul, and he shared this with his family.  Memories of trains, planes, and automobiles to all corners of the globe will remain as treasures to be called upon in times of aching sadness, as Paul was most alive when he was walking the streets of Edinburgh, navigating the subways of New York, or caught up in the magic of Disney.

He was a beloved, pen-ultimate “Car Guy”.  Upon his graduation from Catholic Central in 1970 and a year at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Paul, as a child of the Motor City, entered the automobile business at his grandfather’s Chevrolet Dealership in Detroit.  This would prove to be the beginning of a prolific life as automobile dealer and his identity as a “car guy”.  Following 10 years under the tutelage of his grandfather, Paul left his family story to purchase a dealership in Hays, Kansas, and established his own automobile legacy.  He has held Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Mazda and Chevrolet franchises garnering him many awards and accolades including the honor of being a TIME Magazine Quality Dealer.  As Paul’s career developed, he contributed to the evolution of the automobile industry through his work at NADA, the National Automobile Dealer’s Association.  Recognizing the emerging role of technology and computer information, Paul was an innovator, advisor, and mentor, helping many colleagues traverse the technological highway of the 21st century.  Nearing the end of his professional life, Paul had been the proud owner-dealer of Orem and Bountiful Mazda and remained to his death, the President of Tri-Mac Automotive Advisory Group.

He was a beloved Servant Leader and Friend. Although he played the role of owner and proprietor of a family business, Paul, at heart, was always seeking to serve.  If he wasn’t selling Christmas trees for the Optimist Club or serving on the board of a hospital or school, Paul offered a place of employment for people to feel a sense of purpose and connection, so that they may be able to care for their families and also participate in the community.  His friends and community will miss his big heart, his even bigger smile, and his unwavering dedication.

He was a beloved Highland Piper. For some, Paul will be remembered as the call-in-the-middle-of-the-night-guy to solve any problem big or small.  For others, he was always ready to round out a foursome and be a true source for clarifying the rules of the grand game of golf.  For many, he will always be pictured wandering the hills of Scotland playing an enchanting melody on his prized, sparkling bagpipes.

Preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy, his father Lawrence, and two grandsons, Luke and Zach, Paul leaves behind his numerous nephews and nieces and their parents, his seven siblings: Margaret; Larry and his wife, Dorothy; Betsy and her husband and Paul’s lifelong friend, Fred; Mike and his wife, Lou; Chris and his partner, Annette; and Fred and his wife, JoEllen. Paul also leaves behind the mother of his children, Terri.  He will be forever in the hearts of his four daughters, nine grandchildren, and the many generations to follow: Jenny, her husband, Christian, and two children, Elyse and Cian; Stacey and her daughters, Allison and Emily; Calley, her husband Brett, and two daughters, Claire and Chloe; and Shannon, her husband, Brad, and son, Callen.

Though his time was far too short, Paul will be forever loved.

Sending the entire MacDonald clan heartfelt love and support. I will remember Paul playing his bagpipes standing on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Maui and imagining that all the whales, dolphins and other sea creatures who were hearing him were smiling their wet smiles at the beauty he created. Go in peace, Paul, back to the light from which you came to us. Dayle Spencer

I only recently got to know Paul through Facebook where he created a group dedicated to register the 3,575 1969 Camaro Indy Pace Car Replicas. Many quickly joined Paul in this effort, I being one of them. He was doing something that some said couldn't be done and was in the midst of proving them wrong. I've had several conversations with Paul in the last 12 months about cars, golf, and life. Somehow he saw that I was the guy to carry on with his project. I will Paul, I will. Rest in peace my friend.

Life so infrequently brings us the rare opportunity of celebrating the joy in a moment with spectacular flare. One such fond remembrance of Paul was the moment Paul on his bagpipes, and me in a gorilla suit sporting a kilt and tartan tam, pranked brother Mike in front of visiting Japanese car execs on Maui by hitting golf balls out into the sea and dancing together on a bluff looking out to Molokai to the tune of “Scotland the Brave.” My condolences go out to all of Paul’s family - and together we lovingly laud him with the final two verses of “Going Home,” There's no break, there's no end Just a living on Wide awake with a smile Going on and on Going home, going home I'm just going home It's not far, just close by Through an open door I am going home I'm just going home Saining blessings upon you Paul.

Aloha. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Paul or his family. His brother Mike and his wife Louise are friends, in every sense of the word. I am deeply saddened by my friends loss of his older brother Paul. But in reading this joy of life tribute about a man I sadly never knew, it is so evident that he was deeply loved by his friends and family that it brings me comfort knowing that my friend Mike and his wife are now surrounded by so many that loved Paul as deeply as he did. And that being surrounded by so many who Paul touched throughout his life, will help my friend Mike through this very difficult time. Aloha, Vic Yannacone

Paul will be so missed by the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at WaKeeney. Paul played the bagpipes at our Cemetery many times to honor our veterans. In fact, him and Rev Gibbs played last year during Covid (with no one else present) as part of a National effort to remember Veterans in WW II. I am so appreciative of him sharing his talent with us. Everytime I hear the bagpipes, I will remember Paul. Many prayers for him and his family.

Dear MacDonald family- My deepest condolences for your loss. I will forever cherish wonderful memories of Paul. My experiences with Paul were that he was always very kind, he put others first, and he lifted others up. It was an honor knowing him. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May the Lord bring you comfort and peace. “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” - Psalm 23

Prayers and condolences to the MacDonald family. I spent 4 years with Paul at Catholic Central. Paul was a well liked and respected member of our class. Over the years we became closer friends. Paul would attend our reunions and he even brought his bagpipes to usher in the priests at our Boys Bowl Mass and Breakfast. I was hoping he could repeat at our 50th Reunion, but at the last minute, it didn't happen. Rest in Peace Paul. We all miss you.

There are so many vivid memories of friend and dear CC classmate Paul MacDonald. It seemed that we were on separate academic and extracurricular school paths so many years ago, yet really got to know the vibrant Paul at our recent CC 70' reunions. Clear recollections of Paul wearing (it still fit) his CC band sweater to the 2015 Boys Bowl, Paul holding court with mates Feeney, Brennan, Collins at Jack Cahill's Irish Pub. Paul proudly shared vintage footage of some excellent CC Marching Band Football halftime performances through E-mail with some of us recently. Must say that Paul was a genuine leader of the band and as players beneath the stadium at 1/2 time, we missed out on a live action first rate field orchestra. For our September 50+1 reunion this year, Paul signed up with us for the golf event. We were all looking forward to playing along with Scotsman Paul and for now, a rain check later on. For me the legacy of Paul McDonald lives on most days. For when not riding a bicycle, I've been driving a 2016 Mazda 3 that Paul sold me on, in between plays while sitting together at the 2015 Boys Bowl Game. Gratitude now and for always Shamrock Paul McDonald.

I am at loss for words as no words are sufficient for the grief and sadness I hold in my heart. Yet, I have no doubt in my heart of the love that God has (yes- has) for Paul. God’s love and mercy gathered Paul into his embrace and has welcomed him home. Where there are no more tears or sadness. There is just one eternal loving embrace with God. I will cherish the memories I hold in my heart: Meeting Paul when I was 10 years old while visiting my “kissing cousins” the Hassetts in Detroit. He sold me my first car, a Cutlass Calais, from his dealership in Hays. He helped advise me on future car purchases. His love of Disney cruises. His passion about his Scottish heritage. Of course the bagpipes! Seeing him when we would visit my parents in Hays. His extensive knowledge on so many subjects. His ability to make me feel special. Our hearts and prayers are with all of his family as they traverse this road of grief. Love, Mary, Tony & Molly Eternal rest grant unto Paul, O Lord And may perpetual light shine upon him.

It has been over two years since the passing of my Papa. There have been many things I wish he could see today. Papa helped me become a better golfer at young age ever and if he saw how much I have improved, he would be very proud. I miss my papa everyday and I would give anything to have him come back. You will always have a special place in my heart Papa. Love your grandson, Cian
