Jun 02, 1959---Jan 28, 2022

Deacon Stephen H. White DVM, 62, Leawood, KS passed away Friday, January 28, 2022.  A Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 am followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM Friday, February 4, at Cure of Ars Catholic Church, 9405 Mission Rd., Leawood, KS.  Burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

Steve was born in Kansas City, MO to Victor and Shirley (Coffield) White.  He was a graduate of Rockhurst High School, Kansas State University and the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Steve married Lisa in July of 1990 and they were happily married for 31 years. He worked as a veterinarian for 36 years and was beloved by so many. He had a passion for helping people take care of their pets and valued the many friendships he made through his work. Steve also had a passion for studying the sacred scriptures, as well as enjoying fly fishing, gardening, and woodworking. It brought joy to his heart to use his gift of craftsmanship for his loved ones and his gift of teaching to help others to know the love and mercy of God. What he treasured most was the time he spent with his family and pouring out his great love for them.

Steve was actively involved in his parish at Cure of Ars Catholic Church. He had a profound love for his Catholic faith and encountering Jesus through the Eucharist and other Sacraments. In June 2017 he was ordained a deacon and he spent the last 4 1/2 years serving as a deacon in his parish.  The most important thing in life for Steve was to seek to know and do God’s will. It was the driving force behind all his decisions. During Steve’s final days, he told his wife, Lisa “I can’t imagine having a better life. It’s been really fulfilling. I just hope I gave glory to God”.

When asked if he had anything to say to his parishioners he said “I’m just so sorry my service as a deacon was so short, but I did the best that I could. Please pray for me.” This gentle and humble man will be missed by so many and we are so grateful for the years we were able to spend with him and for the great impact he had on our lives.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law David Kreamer.  He is survived by his wife Lisa, two daughters Kimberly White, Kathryn (Elliott) Johnson, granddaughter Zelie Johnson, sister Sue Kreamer, two brothers Martin White, James White and extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Cure of Ars Catholic Church, Holy Family School of Faith, Apostles of the Interior Life, KC Pet Project.

To the family and friends of Stephen White, My thoughts and prayers are with you. I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like to lose someone so close, at such a young age. Although we all know what it’s like to lose something or someone, this was a long hard battle and he is in a better place. May you rest easy knowing that the struggle is over. May you take the time to mourn the loss of a loved one and be strong knowing that Stephen is in peace with the Lord. Embrace and cherish the good memories you’ve had with him during his time here on earth. My sincerest condolences to the family with love!

Dear Lisa, Kim, and Kit - I know I don’t have the right words to help in your grief, but I want you to know what a blessing Steve was to me. To work with him day in and out was to know his steadfast, kind, and humble nature. I remember him having me save old invoice papers to take home to you girls when you were little to color on. He first and foremost loved Jesus and you, his family. It was obvious in all that he did. He will be missed by so many, and I’m a better person by knowing him. God bless you all as you navigate this difficult road of grief. You’re in my prayers. Jenny Slusser - Camp Canine Kennel.

Steve was one of the best men I have ever known. Not only did he take great care of our cats throughout the years, but he always prayed over them as they were about to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I will very much miss the talks we had about God and Jesus.

Knowing Steve White was a blessing in every way. I've known him since his first days at Fairway. We shared a love for "badger catchers" as he referred to dachshunds. More than once Steve was called to make a late night visit back to the clinic to care for one of my pets. But it was more than his dedication to his profession, there was an aura around Steve that was special. My daughter has had the privilege of working with Steve for over 18 years. He has guided her in her job but also as a person. The world without Steve White will never be quite the same.

Worked with Dr. White at Fairway Animal Hospital ,Lawrence ,Kansas

I think if someone set out to intentionally create the most kind and gentle person they could fathom, they’d be hard pressed to do better than Dr. White. I gained so much knowledge from him during my time at Fairway. He was always eager to teach and welcomed my endless questions. He fostered an environment of learning and of empathy in his nursing staff, and his example of compassion for his patients and clients is something I still aspire to emulate over a decade later. My sincerest sympathies go out to Steve’s family and the rest of the Fairway team. I hope the sadness of his departure is tempered by the knowledge that he is free from pain now, and seeing that his work and faith touched so many lives. The world is a better place for having known his light.

From day one of Vet school Steve was a friend to everyone in the class. Always available to help with Anatomy questions or organize a group of guys to imitate the Supremes and sing at our first class picnic to break the ice. Spirited discussions about physiology or a long bike ride in the Manhattan countryside with Tom and friends is where he was at his best. In the KC Veterinary world he was unofficially voted as the person we would want to be the poster boy for what we wanted our profession to look like. Kind, caring, brilliant, thoughtful, and always happy to help with a difficult case. He will be more than missed.

Dr. White was so kind to me and my dog when my dog was very sick, and he got him back to health and got him running on 4 legs again. I only had limited interactions with him as a patient at FAH but he was always so nice and helpful and took extra time to help me make the right choice for my dog. I’m forever grateful. My thoughts are with his family.

Julia Gordon Feb 01, 2022

Former coworker of Steve ,Palco ,Kansas

I was Steve’s veterinary assistant for just over a year, and while that time may seem short, he had a profound impact on me and my tenure at Fairway Animal Hospital. His gentle nature and kind spirit emanated from every interaction he had. He took extra time to talk with clients, and he handled pets with the most tender care. He was so openly loving, and talked often of his family. He was particularly in love with his sweet granddaughter Zelie, and relished any opportunity to talk about her and show photographs of her. My heart and mind cannot fathom our world losing such a precious soul as Steve, but I fully believe he is at peace and that the Lord told him “Well done, good and faithful servant” upon his return home. We will miss you so much, Dr. White! Thank you for making our world a better place.

Dear Dr. White’s family, Years ago, we had a tiny dachshund and we had to go out of town. Dr. White took Nathan home for the weekend! When we picked Nathan up, we were given a PRECIOUS, framed art project that Dr. White’s darling family created! It had photos of the dog and drawings of antics that they had experienced! We still have it up on the wall! What a loss. Lisa and Lenny Cohen

I am so saddened to hear of Dr. White's passing. When we were looking for a cat to adopt, the last place we went was FAH. As it turns out, Dr. White had found this darling orange tabby in his neighborhood & couldn't find its owners, so he brought him to his work. We gladly took little Niles home. That was 30 years ago & we have been clients ever since. He was so soft spoken, kind, passionate about his work, knowledgeable & every patient he saw was the "cutest"! Our deepest condolences to his beautiful family. He will, as always, be the light that guides you and the love and strength that lifts & carries you. He is resting now in the grace, peace & knowledge of the Lord!

We were so deeply sorry to hear of Steve's passing. He was a kind and thoughtful caregiver to several of our cats and dogs over the last three decades. He always had a smile on his face, and seemed to find true joy in his work. It was an honor to know him, and a blessing to have had his support and advise when there were concerns about or illnesses in our pets. We knew he would be gathered by the angels one day, but are broken hearted that it was so premature. We know he had so much more love to give his family, his patients and his savior.

I grew up with Steve as a classmate attending Cure of Ars. In grade school I would ride my bike down Lee Blvd. to his house and we would hang out. More recently, I got to see Steve at his office where he took excellent care of 3 of my dogs. After having to put one of my dogs down (due to old age and medical issues), Steve submitted a memorial in honor of my beloved dog Kodi at the K-State School of Veterinarian Medicine. Very nice of him to do that. That is Steve, always helping and thinking of others.Last year Steve was so kind to preside at my brother Steve's funeral at Cure. Dr. White cared for our 3 pets over the past 16 years. To me, he was an angel, the embodiment of compassion. I remember his gentle hands, holding and stroking our beloved pets, his patient manner, attentive gaze, his open ears. His staff loved him. He guided and consoled us through the difficult moments when we were losing precious members of our little family. He conveyed a gentle quiet that I cherished. Bringing my dog, Mia to him after losing my husband, I saw, as he opened her chart, a photo of a monkey embracing a dog’s back my husband had given him from one of his trips to Africa or Asia. Stephen had saved it in Mia’s chart. As a pediatrician, I could appreciate the piercing intelligence and insight he brought to his profession and art. I admired him. He warmed my heart. He was a role model for so many. I worked many years in the Pocono mountains of rural Pennsylvania. There, our vet had a bumper sticker, “Real doctors don’t take care of only one species”. I loved that. I thought often of that when I was with Dr White. He cared so well for all who knew him. He has enriched my life, and through I didn’t know him except as our Vet, I too mourn his loss. He was a healer for us all. Know, his loving family, while you grieve him, there are thousands more who remember him, and who go forward with him in their hearts, with his words and gestures, and continue to be moved and changed by his gentle richness in our world. And this…one of my favorite Dr. White lines, “Yes, it is okay for Fritz to eat that tuna and cold cuts from Whole Food. He kills mice? It only hurts the mice. My partner and I have often talked about starting a cat food business. Yes, we will call it “Minced Mouse”! I send you, his family, these memories, and the love of so many who benefitted from the humble grandeur Stephen White brought to us all.

Dr. White diligently saw after my dogs Teddy, Rosie and their puppy Pancho for 12 years. When I found out Rosie was pregnant in February of 2020, it was Dr. White who walked me through the pregnancy and birth cycle. Dr. White followed up around the clock when she gave birth, and everything he had said was precisely correct. Much to my shock, one of the newborn pups had a quarter sized hole in his belly and I was heartbroken that the pup might not make it. Dr. White said he’d woken in the night and came up with a plan to try and save the puppy, and once again, miraculously, Dr. White’s treatment plan was precisely correct and the puppy, whom I kept and named Pancho, made it. Dr. White saved my puppy. I have at least a dozen instances of seeing Dr. White since 2009 where some bizarre set of grave ailments had befallen one of my dogs and every time, Dr. White saved the day. While I am incredibly sad to have lost him, my sadness does not come close to exceeding the gratitude I have toward him. I would like his family to know that my life and the lives of my dogs were all blessed by him and that I am incredibly and indescribably thankful to have had him in my life.
