Pete was born January 4, 1935 in Newark, New Jersey, son of Phillip and Jean Lons. He was accepted to the University of Kansas School of Architecture, graduating in 1960. He met his wife, of 63 years, Joan (Heffernon) at KU. Pete was a veteran of the Air Force Military Police. He started his career as an architect at Skelly Oil Co. on the Plaza, was self-employed with his own firm and also worked for Black & Veatch for several years. After retirement he enjoyed landscaping and cooking for his wife, Joan.
Pete was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and was an architectural design consultant for the church during it’s construction. His faith was of great importance to him and he was a member of RCIA in the church for many years. It brought him joy to sponsor others into the Catholic faith.
He was the most kind, loving, and generous man to his family, friends, and those in need. He was known for his dry sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh with his puns and what we called his corny jokes! He took the most pride in being Papa to his grandchildren; taking them to the pool, playing games with them, spoiling them with their favorite treat – doughnuts, and lavishing them with hugs and kisses.
He will be greatly missed for his warm, generous ways, and the laughter he brought to all, by his wife, Joan, three children: Bob (Joan) Lons of Olathe, KS; Annette (Doug) Cook of Overland Park, KS; Kristin (Bill) Greet of Overland Park, KS; 7 grandchildren: Deprise Lons, Lexi Lons, Austin (Lyndsey) Cook, Spencer Cook, Carsyn Greet, Rylee Greet, and Kayli Greet.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gloria Lons and brother Jim Lons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project.
