Peter A. Lons, 88, Overland Park, KS, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023. The Rosary will prayed at 4 p.m. with the visitation from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 30 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St., Overland Park, KS. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.

Pete was born January 4, 1935 in Newark, New Jersey, son of Phillip and Jean Lons.  He was accepted to the University of Kansas School of Architecture, graduating in 1960.  He met his wife, of 63 years, Joan (Heffernon) at KU. Pete was a veteran of the Air Force Military Police.  He started his career as an architect at Skelly Oil Co. on the Plaza, was self-employed with his own firm and also worked for Black & Veatch for several years.  After retirement he enjoyed landscaping and cooking for his wife, Joan.

Pete was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and was an architectural design consultant for the church during it’s construction.  His faith was of great importance to him and he was a member of RCIA in the church for many years.  It brought him joy to sponsor others into the Catholic faith.

He was the most kind, loving, and generous man to his family, friends, and those in need.  He was known for his dry sense of humor.  He loved to make people laugh with his puns and what we called his corny jokes!  He took the most pride in being Papa to his grandchildren; taking them to the pool, playing games with them, spoiling them with their favorite treat – doughnuts, and lavishing them with hugs and kisses.

He will be greatly missed for his warm, generous ways, and the laughter he brought to all, by his wife, Joan, three children: Bob (Joan) Lons of Olathe, KS; Annette (Doug) Cook of Overland Park, KS; Kristin (Bill) Greet of Overland Park, KS; 7 grandchildren: Deprise Lons, Lexi Lons, Austin (Lyndsey) Cook, Spencer Cook, Carsyn Greet, Rylee Greet, and Kayli Greet.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, sister Gloria Lons and brother Jim Lons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project.

I was neighbor to Pete and Joan for 25 years. The obituary puts it aptly he was a very Catholic man, great model for being a good neighbor. Spent time talking on the front porch during the summer months. A friend to many in the neighborhood. Know he and Joan will enjoy their reward in Heaven. Sincerely, Terry

Even though I wasn't a good dancer, Uncle Pete always danced the polka with me at wedding receptions. He epitomized love & strength of family. It gives me peace that he, Janet, Johnny, Mom and other Lons & Heffernon family members are watching over us from heaven.

I work for Pete & with him. ,Leawood ,Kansas

I worked with Pete at Black & Veatch. He was always pleasant and easy to talk to. He made everyone that worked for him feel needed and he appreciated their comments and would praise them for their good ideas. I was the office clown who does or comments on anything, and at times Pete got my crazy ideas. Pete was a hard worker unless he had to see what prank I just pulled off to find out what I did. While I worked for him, he went on vacation and asked me to open his mail and see that the work continued without any problems. In one of those visits, I sat there and looked around his office and thought this space is really dull because everything was the same tan color: the walls, the floor tile, his desk and file cabinet, and a Hawaiian goddess he brought back from his last vacation. Right then I thought he needed more color and I was going to see that he got it some way, some how. As I sat there looking around, I noticed his sun goddess was tan and had added no color to his environment. As I walked out his office, I mentioned to the Interior Designers that sat outside his office how dull everything was and suggested that his goddess with a little color would really brighten his office. The young ladies got up and looked at his dull and drab office and grabbed the goddess and brought to their desks to begin a thought process how they could help the very colorless goddess be alive with color. I left the decorators to do their job on the goddess and was shocked when I saw it all bright and colorful. I thought they painted it but it was only colorful press on vinyl sheets they used to do their presentation displays for clients. It was very colorful and beautiful and was a great improvement over its original dull color. When Pete came back from vacation, he was all smiles and happy he got away from the grind and his wonderful dry sense of humor. He was in his office a short time when he yelled, “ZUBECK!” (like everyone one else has done in my life). He sat at his desk and pointed at his now very beautiful sun goddess, speechless over her beautiful colors. The Interior designers jumped up to see Pete’s reaction to their hard work. Later, all of the creative people and his secretary were invited one weekend to his home for a Hawaiian party where his colorful goddess was on a pedestal in his yard. Pete was like a big kid enjoying the party with a big smile. Later, he asked the partiers to name his goddess, and when everyone was done he collected the names. Pete and his wife came back with the winning name. Tammy Fay Ray (or Re). The name was based on a preacher’s wife who really painted her face to be on TV. From the looks of the happy faces, everyone had a very good time, I know my wife and I did, I think she enjoyed it more because she could see what kind of crazy things I did at work and not just like home.
