Apr 18, 1942---Aug 03, 2023

Timothy J. Gardner, 81, of Kansas City, KS, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023 at North Kansas City Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. The visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m. on Friday, August 11, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 416 N. 14th St. Kansas City, KS. The Funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral. Entombment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Cathedral.

Tim was born April 18, 1942, in Oklahoma City, OK, the son of Clarence and Betty Ann (Nugent) Gardner. Tim was a very gifted athlete and played in the Ban Johnson baseball league, was a football star at Rockhurst High School, and went on to play baseball for the University of Kansas as a catcher. Tim had served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp. He met the love of his life Barbara Grantham and they were married in Kansas City, KS. He had worked for the Social Security Administration for over 35 years and retired in 2005.

Tim was a member of the Cathedral of St. Peter's Church, where he and his children attended. He was strong in his faith and devoted to his family. His grandchildren were very special to him, and he was very involved in their lives. He was known by all as a great coach in football, basketball, and baseball. He absolutely loved sports, and he identified people by "where they played their ball." He was never late to a game; in fact, he often beat the teams to the field, court, or stadium because he never wanted to miss the warmups. Later in life, he attended all his grandchildren's games and became their biggest fan. He remembered every play of every game he ever watched.

Tim loved talking to people and would help anyone that needed it. He was known to paint houses (at a deep discount), cut grass for those in the neighborhood, take care of the field at Bishop Ward (including weed eating "the hill" for several years). He also visited many sick or dying friends in the hospital over the years. He had a great sense of humor and made friends wherever he would go. He never put on a false front, was a genuine person, and would give you the shirt off his back (but not his sweatpants). He had so many close friends that were a big part of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Betty, brothers, John and Phil, and a sister Mary Beth Beier, and grandson Alex. Tim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara, 3 children, Ted, Pete and Jane (Jace), Grandchildren Megan, Abby, Nicole, Sarah, Daniel, and Allison, Brother, Bob Gardner (Therese) and Sister, Kathy Reiswig (Dave) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Tim was very much like a second father to me and many of my friends that grew up in the St. Peter’s area. He volunteered countless hours coaching myself and many others in football, baseball and taking us to countless games all over the metro. He could tell and great story and didn’t know a stranger. It was an honor to play for his teams and to be welcomed as a friend to him and his family.

I'm so sorry to hear of Tim's passing. He was one of the best people I've ever met and I was blessed to be able to be around him so many different times. I love that he would go out and visit my mother when she was in the nursing home even though he knew she might not know who he was, he would still visit. He was a great man and he will be missed. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

i worked with Tim for a long time. he was a kind man. he knew just what to say when you needed him. he called me "Warsaw Warrior", because my grandparents were from Poland. he also called me "the Eastern Block Country". I had grandparents from Russia and my grandmother was Slavic. i never felt offended by his comments because Tim was a kind person. he will be missed. Rest in Peace Tim, God needs you. So sorry to hear about Tim's passing. My brothers and I grew up in the same neighborhood. Tim was a few years older and I remember him as a good athlete and a nice guy, We rode to Rockhurst together when he was a senior and I was a freshman along with about five other boys. He was always a great guy to everyone. Though I haven't seen him in many years, I still think of Tim fondly.

Tim and I had a ride from KCK to Rockhurst High School for several years—he was the Center/Guard at Rockhurst and Field Goal @ Xtra Point kicker—a great person and very smart student.

When Tim and the family moved to Kansas City, I was one of the first to meet him and we quickly developed a relationship that lasted all thru the years. He was a good friend to me and my family the past 60 plus years. He was a very unique person and will be greatly missed. I will always remember Tim and our relationship. From my wife and me, God bless the family.

Tim was simply the best at everything. Football, baseball, coaching, storytelling, squeezing that big body into a VW Bug, walking off roofs, conversationalist, quietly very funny. A man's man and a family first man. I think he had me on speed dial when he was in the car pool lane, I guess for his grandkids. No matter where we were in the conversation, I'd get the gruff "gotta go" and the click.

What a good person. I have a lot of good memories from days of playing ban Johnson together. Got to see Tim when he came to watch his son at Benedictine. He will be missed. A really good person.

Tim Gardner was a special type guy. As I remember he helped raise his brother and sisters. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for near anyone. Heaven just got a Superstar. I have known him since grade school and anyone that knew him, knows how special he was. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

Many fine friends and condolences for Tim. All cite Tim's unique qualities and bring to mind good times. I was always impressed that Tim was talanted, and that he shared those talents for willingly. For me me, I sensed that Tim was so genuine. Nothing put on. No airs. And so appreciated in this world filled with noise. Prayers for peace and strength for Barbara and family.

Having read the earlier comments of others there is really little more that I can add except to say that all the good things said about him are true in spades. He could seem to be gruff at times but that exterior housed the heart of a man who would help anyone who needed help whether family , friend, acquaintance, or otherwise. He is missed by all who knew him, and I in particular will miss my weekly phone call from/to him.
