Sep 18, 1934---Sep 01, 2023

Patrick Alton Lee Keener, 88, Lenexa, Kansas, formerly of McCracken and Liberal, Kansas passed away Friday, September 1, 2023 at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas.

Patrick was born September 18, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri. Patrick met Betty at Fort Hays State College and they were later married August 7, 1957. Together they moved to Liberal, Kansas in 1960 following the birth of Michael in 1958 and Darla in 1959. There Dara was born in 1964 and Mark in 1967. The family then moved to Shawnee, Kansas in 1972 followed by a move to Lenexa, Kansas in 1985. Patrick and Betty briefly moved to Spring, Texas from 1988 to 1989 and then back to their home in Lenexa, Kansas.

Following his high school graduation, Patrick enlisted in the U.S. Army and served our country in Korea. Patrick was an early-morning deliveryman for Higher View Dairy when he met Betty and she loved to say she “married the milkman”. Pat was an accountant at National Helium in Liberal, Kansas for many years. After National Helium, he was assistant treasurer and then treasurer for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline. Most importantly to him, Patrick was husband, father, grandpa, and great grandpa. Patrick was never far from his atlas, as he loved planning trips for his grandchildren. While they weren’t usually card partners, Patrick and Betty loved to play pinochle with their kids and grandkids, with a bowl of peanuts and red hots at hand. He also would’ve made a great contestant on the Wheel of Fortune (at least according to him). He loved keeping up with the stock market up to his final days. Patrick’s main goal in life was to make sure Betty and his family were taken care of, he left this world with his goal accomplished, while quietly helping many others along the way.

He is survived by his four children; Mike (Kathy), Darla (Steve), Dara (Jim), and Mark (Heidi), 13 grandchildren; Shawn (Dani), Scott (Candy), JP (Ashley), Rebecca (AJ), Genna (Sireena), Garrett, John (Liz), Niccole (Avery), Brock, Cate, Jacque, Jarrodd, and Gracelyn and 9 great-grandchildren; Sebastian, Anderson, Violet, Isaac, Kelsey, June, Sylvie, Ellison, and Penny. Patrick is also survived by sisters Linda and Mary, and many nieces and nephews.

Please feel free to join us in a casual service to celebrate Pat’s life Tuesday September 5, 12:00 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home (8535 Monrovia Street, Lenexa, KS).  A visitation will follow services until 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home.  Private family interment will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.  If you want to wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt, Patrick and family will be wearing theirs!

I am so sorry for the loss of your dad right on top of losing your mother. Those two together have to be terribly hard, but I know the feeling that Patrick is now with Betty as they’ve been separated for a long time with her illness, but now they are both happy and in that Hass to help ease your pain. Thinking of you and saying prayers and sending love. Gracie

I want to express my sincere condolences to the Keener family members in the loss of both Betty and Patrick just a few weeks apart. I have been a neighbor for years and was unaware of Betty passing last month and now Patrick. I use to walk my dog by their house years ago when they were more active and Pat would joke about us naming our dog after their daughter, Darla. Then more recently I would see Pat walking up and down the sidewalk and was amazed at the physical change and losing weight, but then he stopped. I sincerely will miss passing their home and seeing their family come by to assist them in many ways. I pray that God comforts them in their new eternal home, together again.
