Apr 10, 1934---Nov 14, 2023

Gene was born on April 10, 1934, in Larned, Kansas to Lawrence and Mary Margaret Zecha Salmans. He was one of six children with brothers Lee, and Lynn and sisters Elizabeth, RoseMary and Beverly.  He had several careers beginning with the USAF as a Flight Engineer/Loadmaster  both active and reserves retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant.  Upon retirement from active duty he went on to earn his bachelor's and master's degree.  He completed his career at Olathe South High School as a history teacher,   He served on the Board of Directors at Main Street Credit Union and in his spare time, was a co-owner of a house painting business.

Gene married Linda Kimbrell on Sept. 2, 1983.  They were both educators with the Olathe Public Schools.  During their vacations they hiked extensively in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, covering as many trails as possible.  Boating on the lakes of Arkansas was another favorite activity.

On a personal note, Gene always had several jokes and funny stories to keep us all laughing.   Often he would laugh as much or more than we were.  He was a thoughtful uncle and godfather.  Family gatherings were among his finest hours.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 24, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS.

A graveside military service will be held at Leavenworth National Cemetery, 150 Muncie Rd. Leavenworth, KS, on Thursday, November 30, at 1:30 p.m.

Gene and I worked together at Olathe School District. I was one of the Secretaries. Gene was a little older than me but we grew up only 8 miles from each other. One time Gene took pictures of my little town of Pawnee Rock and put them in the lounge for everyone to see where I grew up. There wasn’t much to the little town anymore. I really enjoyed visiting with Gene and his smile and laughter could brighten your day. My condolences to all his family and friends.

Gene was a straight-shooter who always did the correct thing. He stated his opinion and knew his “true north.” He was a professional colleague who did what was best for kids. He was a good and kind person.

“Mr. Salmans” was one of my very favorite teachers ever, as he was for so many of his students. The Class of 1993 just had their 30th class reunion a few weeks ago and I must have heard a dozen “Mr. Salmans” stories that weekend. His storytelling was legendary, and his laugh and sense of humor contagious, both of which made him a very effective educator. He made a big sifference for so many of us. Rest well.

Gene was a great teacher. I learned so many life tips in the classes I had with him way back when there was only Olathe High School. He always seemed to smile and greet everyone warmly. Rest in Peace.

I was a neighbor of Gene’s for many years and always enjoyed talking to him. He was indeed a very nice man. I got a kick out of his sense of humor and funny stories and jokes. He always had a kind smile on his face. I also appreciated his tips and advice on keeping up a home. I know he will be missed by many friends and neighbors. And it’s clear from some of the comments his former students made that he had very positive and lasting effects on many young people. May God bless Gene and his family.

Gene was my Dad's older brother. He served as my Dad's Best Man at his wedding. My earliest memories of Gene are of his telling jokes and playing cards with his two brothers and laughing like school boys. I was told a lot of stories about Gene and his brothers and their adventures together. Gene and his brothers played lots of games with each other like the time they had a mulberry fight in their brand new white T-Shirts. My Grandmother did not always appreciate their adventurous efforts. He indicated to me that he used to drive a school bus for his Alma Mater, Zook High School. He told me he ran a tight ship. Students who misbehaved on his bus had to walk the last quarter of a mile to their residence. Second offenders had to walk the last half of a mile to their homes. He smiled as he told me that he had very few problems on his bus route. Of course, he admitted that he informed the parents of all of the kids and had their permission for his disciplinary measures. Gene told me about his time in the Air Force. He had a real scare one time when they were transporting a general to another base and they lost one of the engines while in flight. Gene had to babysit the plane until the new engine was installed. Everyone in the family will miss Gene's wit and humor. I found out lately that Gene had a real weakness for oatmeal cookies with raisins and Klondike Ice Cream bars. We will greatly miss Gene and we express our deepest sympathy to Lin, his wife of 40 years.
