Mar 10, 1969---Mar 27, 2024

Father Travis W. Mecum, priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2024, at Villa St. Francis.  Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m., with the Rosary prayed at 10:45 a.m. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Friday April 5, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Dr, Shawnee, KS 66203.  Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.

Father Travis was born on March 10, 1969, in Hays, KS, the son of Gary Lyle and Clara Rose (Gould) Mecum.  Fr Travis grew up in Olmitz, KS, and graduated from Otis-Bison High School in 1987.  He attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS, where he studied vocal performance for a year before enlisting in the United States Army Reserves.  He then studied music education at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS.  He held a variety of positions before pursuing his life-long passion of becoming a priest, including data development technologist for Black & Veatch; realtor and sales manager at Angel Berry Realtors; polysomnographer at SomniTech, Saint Luke’s Health Systems, and Shawnee Mission Medical Center; and polysomnographer and sleep center technical/clinical manager at MidAmerica Neuroscience Institute/Rowe Neurology Institute.  In 2015, Fr Travis completed an Associate of Arts in applied organizational leadership at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, KS.  He then moved to Weston, MA, where he attended Pope Saint John XXIII National Seminary, completing a Masters of Divinity in 2020.  He was ordained as a priest in May 2020 and has worked in the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, first at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lenexa, and at the time of his death, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, KS.

Father Travis loved serving as a Parish priest and all that it entailed.  He also loved spending time with his family and held a special fondness for family cats.  He enjoyed writing poems and short stories as well as verses for cards and songs. And he loved anything Irish, as his interest in the priesthood was heavily influenced by Father Murphy from St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz, KS.

Father Travis was preceded in death by his father, Gary Mecum; his brother, Vic Hamby; and his great-niece, Brittani Thornton.  He is survived by his mother, Clara Mecum; sisters Tammy Legleiter (Pat) and Julie Fields; niece Shari Weber (Tony, Blake, Paighton, Anthony); and many other that were beloved to him.

Father Travis, The short time I was able to know you as a Knight, prior to entering the Seminary, I knew you would become a great Priest. So sad we had to lose you here but know there is other plans for you upstairs that puts me at ease. You will be missed. Vivat Jesus! God Bless You. Mike

May you rest easy Fr Travis... We are going to miss you so much... I’ll always remember how he would end every Mass “Jesus loves you and so do I”. It was a great reminder all our days are in the hands of the one who made us and loves us. RIP to a great man and priest.

Tammy and Julie and family, my heart goes out to you. I just remember Travis as a cute little kid when we were in junior high in high school. I know what it’s like to lose a brother and I pray that God brings you all comfort. My thoughts are with you.

I loved serving on the Holy Trinity Liturgical Council with Father Travis and always appreciated his wise insight. I especially loved the way he ended every sermon. "Remember, God loves each and every one of you. And so do I." Rest in peace, Father.

Father Travis was the first Priest I really spoke with when I started RCIA. He was so kind, loving, and patient, and he always had time for my questions. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Condolences to the Family of Father Travis Mecum. Fr. Travis's ministry was visiting the elderly in the Parish. I am elderly and have health issues. He came to visit me in September 2023. His blessing and visit are very special memories I will cherish of Fr. Travis. I pray. May His sole and all the soles of the faithful departed through mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

The loss of Father Travis has been a blow to us and we can't imagine the impact of his passing to those who knew him well--and for a long time. It was touching to see so many of his brother priests join in the funeral Mass in tribute to him. Not long after Father Travis was assigned to our parish we had the opportunity to fill out cards of appreciation for our several priests and deacons. Russ recalls his message in Father Travis' card thanked him for the poetry he had shared at a recent weekend Mass. In light of recent events, Russ is now very grateful that this comment could be shared. Russ turned to me following what might have been our first sighting of Father Travis as he passed near a doorway on the way to the sacristy. Russ' comment was "It's Father Brown!"--seeing a member of the clergy in black with a silhouette resembling the Father Brown character in a recent Public Television series. How right the comment was in terms of the intellect that Father Travis was blessed with (like the G. K. Chesterton sleuth). It's amazing how much talent Father Travis enjoyed and how driven he was to share those gifts with others. Our fervent prayers for him in recent weeks have evolved to us asking for his intercession. Blessings to those who knew him best and now cherish his memory.

I first knew Fr. Travis when as a seminarian he served a summer "internship" at Christ the King in Topeka, my home parish. It was clear to me then that he was a man gifted by God with a spirit and a voice to spread God's word. So moved was I by the strength of his faith in Christ, I made a point to listen to his homilies online following his ordination during COVID and after normal mass attendance resumed. In December of 2022 when my mother had to be hospitalized in Overland Park, I specifically requested that Fr. Travis come to give her the sacrament of the sick, and, in what can only be proof of God's providence, not only was he available but he just so happened to be in the same hospital as my mother when I spoke with him. I will be forever grateful to him for the comfort he gave to my mother not only in administering the sacrament but in the reassurance he offered while talking with her. He was the living embodiment of what a priest should be. To Fr. Travis's family, especially his mother, I offer my deepest condolences and prayers for God's healing grace for you. And I offer you my thanks for everything you did that contributed to Fr. Travis becoming a priest. His legacy of faith and love will live on always.
