May 21, 1946---Mar 31, 2024

Marcia L. G. Shideler, 77, Shawnee, passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024 after a valiant 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer.  Marcia was born on May 21, 1946 in Wichita, Kansas to Robert and Grace Gadberry.  She graduated from Wichita Southeast High School and then attended and graduated from Kansas State University where she met the love of her life, Bob Shideler.  Bob and Marcia were married in 1969 and enjoyed 38 blissful years together until his unexpected passing in 2007.

After college, Bob and Marcia eventually settled in Wichita where she was very involved in the community and was one of the founding members of the Ronald McDonald house.  They relocated to Lenexa in 1986 where Marcia began a 35-year career at Johnson County Community College.  At JCCC, she established their volunteer program and developed the service learning program and thoroughly enjoyed her interactions with the students.

Bob and Marcia were blessed with a daughter, Barbara, and a son, Blake, and five grandchildren whom she adored and loved.  She enjoyed reading, quilting, gardening, genealogy and attending the various sporting events of her grandchildren.

Marcia was a thoughtful and caring lady who was genuinely nice to everyone she met and lived her life with integrity, compassion, class, and respect for others.  She was a wonderful and loving daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend.  She will be greatly missed but we are eternally grateful for the time we had with her, especially our last trip with “Mutti” to Florida just five weeks before her passing.

Marcia was predeceased by her beloved husband Bob and her parents.   She is survived by her daughter Barb (Bob) Burns; her son Blake (Amy) Shideler; her grandchildren Jack, Brian and Allie Burns, and Luke and Brynn Shideler; and her sister Dee Martz.

Services will be held at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS, on Monday, April 8 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Safehome in Overland Park or the charity of your choice.

friend and "out-law" ,Shawnee ,Kansas

Marcia was my youngest brother Bob's mother-in-law and a kind, gracious, and humble person. I will be forever grateful for her loving presence in my nephews' and niece's lives--and her quiet but constant support for all of us. Marcia was the epitome of class. One of my favorite memories is her taking a picture with my nephews Jack and Brian (her grandsons) at the Cornell-Harvard football game a few years ago. Here she was--all 5 feet of her--standing proudly between her two college football grandsons! What a memory! Godspeed, Marcia. I am sure you are soaring with the angels. I am blessed to have known and loved you.

JCCC Colleague/friend/quilter ,Mission ,Kansas

I am so very sorry for your loss. Marcia and I worked together at JCCC for many many years!!!! She was a true kindred spirit and a genuine student advocate. I got to know Marcia really well when we traveled to Paris together on a JCCC sponsored Spring Break trip for students and faculty. It was a turning point for our work relationship that took a more personal level in our shared love of quilting. Your mother would beam with pride everytime she spoke of you...her son and daughter....plus her beloved grandchildren!!! I visited her a couple of times at her home during retirement and always loved hearing about the joy that irises in her garden and the heirloom quilts gave her. They are treasured keepsakes from the past. My sincere sympathy to you and your family. It is said that a handmade quilt represents a hug from its maker. Treasure the memories of your dear Mom everytime you wrap yourself in one of her quilts. Peace...

Colleague ,Tucson ,Arizona

Barb & Blake, I was an office mate if your mother’s for more than five years. She was one of the most kind and thoughtful people I knew. I loved to listen to her visit with students, and I marveled at how she would meet a student who didn’t want to do a service learning project, and they would end up being an advocate for volunteering. We taught a leadership course together, and she was compassionate, intelligent and a wonderful colleague. I am so sorry I couldn’t attend your mom’s service, but I’m in Tucson and just heard the news today. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. Sincerely, Ruth Randal
