Susan Elaine Cook, 55, passed away on May 17, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas. Born on July 13, 1969, in Richardson, Texas, Susan lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, creativity, and deep affection for her family and passions.
Susan pursued higher education with distinction. She earned dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communications and English from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Her academic journey continued at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where she obtained her MBA. She also completed a LAN Administrator Vocational Certification, reflecting her lifelong interest in technology.
Her professional life was as diverse and dynamic as her interests. From editing her high school newspaper to spinning classical records as a DJ at her college radio station, Susan's early experiences foreshadowed a career rich in communication and technical expertise. She worked for local newspapers and served as a cartography assistant at Garmin. Her skills extended into administrative roles and culminated most recently in her position as a technical writer at Verra Mobility.
Susan was known for her remarkable intelligence and wit. A talented writer, she won two MENSA short story contests-an achievement that spoke to both her intellect and creativity. Her love of language was matched by her passion for music; she had an eclectic taste and maintained an extensive music collection. She played the piano beautifully and found joy in baking-her kitchen often filled with the aroma of homemade treats.
A self-described computer geek, Susan built her own computers and served as the go-to tech expert for her family. Her love for animals was evident through the many cats she cared for over the years. Above all else, Susan adored her family. She shared a close bond with them and was especially devoted to her niece and nephew.
She is survived by her mother, Eva Lord-Cook; brothers Walter Cook and Theron Cook; and those who were fortunate enough to know her warmth and humor. She was preceded in death by her father, James Cook.
Susan's memory lives on through the stories she told, the music she loved, the knowledge she shared so generously-and the hearts of those who cherished her. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life service for Susan will be held on June 7, 2025 at 10:00 AM at Porter Funeral Homes and Crematory - Lenexa 8535 Monrovia Street.
