Michael Shawn Miller, 69, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2025. Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. with Memorial Services following at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30, at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia Lenexa, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ASCENT Recovery Residences in Joplin, Missouri, at https://roccjoplin.com/ascent-home/, in honor of Mike’s life and the work that meant so much to him.
Mike built a long and successful career in the mortgage industry, most recently retiring as Sales Operations Manager at Zillow Home Loans after nearly seven years with the company. Earlier in his life, he devoted himself to helping others through his work with ASCENT Recovery Residences in Joplin, Missouri, from 2008 to 2016. Many who crossed paths with Mike through ASCENT credit him with making a profound difference in their lives, and some even say he helped save theirs.
Mike’s love of life was most evident in the things he enjoyed—and the people he shared them with. A lifelong golf enthusiast, he was eager to get back on the course after mobility challenges in recent years. He was a passionate fan of live music, often attending concerts several nights a week and traveling across the country to see his favorite performers—including two Paul McCartney shows just months apart. If you knew Mike, chances are good you found yourself at a show with him at some point.
Mike’s love of sports ran deep, but nothing compared to his passion for Kansas Jayhawks basketball. Allen Fieldhouse felt like a second home, and he was proud to pass that love for KU hoops on to his daughter, Sara.
Mike made friends wherever he went—and he went a lot of places, living in every corner of the country from New England to California. Known for his quick wit, unmistakable laugh, and ability to connect with anyone, Mike’s warmth and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Sara and Aaron; and his siblings, Lisa, Peter, Katie, and Amy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Jack.
