Apr 25, 1950---Mar 04, 2026

Douglas James Fencl passed away, hours after receiving Last Rites, with his two sons by his side, on March 4, 2026, at KU Medical Center.  He was born in Wahoo, NE on April 25, 1950, the son of Ruby (Hines) and James Fencl.  He is survived by his sons, Matthew and Christopher; his brother-in-laws James Secunda (and his wife Deborah) and John Secunda (and his wife Patty); his sister-in-law, LeAnne Peters and her five children - Christina, Alexandra, Gunnar, David, and Veronica; and his nephew, Michael Kruger. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary Francis (2022) and his sister, Marsha (2025).

Doug was raised in Nebraska and attended Wayne State College.  He was admitted into the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1972.  Initially assigned to Washington, D.C., he later transferred to New York City, where he met and married Mary Francis in 1979.  His final assignment was in Kansas City, where he worked from 1986 until his retirement in 2004.

Doug had a keen interest in Biblical theology, earning an M.A. in Religious Studies in 2006.  He was actively involved in prison ministry at Leavenworth Penitentiary for several years.  After his wife's admission into the Catholic Church in 2008, Doug returned to the Catholic faith in which he was raised.

An avid traveler, Doug visited countries in six continents.  He had a special attachment to the Holy Land and its Biblical and historical sites, which he researched and traveled to several times.

As a hobby, he enjoyed fiction writing, and recently finished a crime novel.

In his final years he assisted with funerals at the Church and volunteered at a local food pantry.  His favorite spiritual devotion was praying the Holy Rosary, which he recited daily.

Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at Church of the Ascension, located at 9510 West 127th, Overland Park, Kansas.   Visitation will be at 9:00 AM, funeral Mass at 10:00 AM, followed by a reception luncheon.  For those who are available to participate, a rosary will be prayed at 8:45 AM, before the visitation.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Church of the Ascension or Catholic Charities of NE Kansas.

Doug was one of my best friends in college. We lost contact for almost 50 years, but thanks to the internet I was happy to discover he lived in Overland Park where my wife and I have two daughters. We'd get together and relive the college days almost every time we came to visit and we always left laughing. I'd mention a name and he'd say "he was a great guy". When I heard he was sick I just couldn't believe it. I will miss him tremendously. Rich Brown

I first met Doug in NAC 76-11 at Washington, D.C. on January 26. 1976, on the bus to Quantico after we took the oath of allegiance to the United States. From that day on, until we graduated on May 11, 1976, and went our separate ways, Doug never changed: he worked hard, was extremely competitive, and singularly focused on becoming an FBI Agent. During our four + months of rigorous training, however, we did have moments of frivolity and the photo of Doug laughing is one I certainly remember. Not surprisingly, Doug also had the respect of the entire class. In short, and although it has been 50 years since we interacted, my life was positively impacted by Doug, as I viewed him as a prime example of how the FBI should be and one to model; he obviously made the Bureau even better. My sympathies to the family and loved ones on your loss of your father, beloved family member and friend who was an excellent FBI Agent and an outstanding person. May God Bless Us All. Gary M. Dunn

Matt and Chris, We do not have the words to express how saddened we are by your Dad's passing. Our hearts ache, but we rejoice that your Dad will never know sickness or suffering ever again, and that he is reunited with dear Mary Francis, his Parents, and his Sister. Doug was truly the best friend to me that someone could ever have, and I consider him a brother. Our hearts will have a hole in them going forward until we see him again in heaven. Your Dad loved the Lord, his family, his friends, and the Bureau. Doug was so proud of all that you two had accomplished at Rockhurst, KU, Notre Dame, the Navy, and your careers as a chiropractor and business person in China, as well as here in the U.S. However, I also know he was most proud of the kind of men you had each become. Your Dad was the consummate gentleman and Agent. He had an incredibly successful career as an Agent but was also incredibly humble. He always down-played his achievements, never wanting attention or recognition, always pointing accolades to others around him. Chuck Colson, a participant in the Watergate scandal, who later became a Christian, has stated that "Humility is a sure sign of Holiness", and this certainly described your Dad. I believe that the following two traits played a huge role in why your Dad was so successful as an FBI Agent and in his Prison Ministry after he retired: 1. Doug truly believed what the Bible and the Church teaches, that every single human being is made in the very image of God, and therefore has intrinsic value and immeasurable worth. 2. And even though Doug hated the evil acts that people sometimes commit, he believed that through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus every person and soul had the possibility of redemption. The way Doug lived his life, and the way he interacted with, and always treated people with respect, reflected these beliefs. I had so much fun working with your Dad, and he taught me so much about being an Agent, and about life. It is said that we are truly blessed if we encounter two or three people over the course of our life who truly impact our life and make our lives better. Your Dad and Mom were two of those people for Tammy and me. They were a rock for us when we went through our cancer treatments and difficult times in life. Your Dad's life was a life well-lived, and we will miss him so much. We hope you both know that we are available for both of you 24/7 always. We love you. Rod and Tammy Anderson

My family moved to Elkhorn in 1965. One of the first people I met was Doug and we became good friends. I remember eating dinner with Doug, Ruby, Jim and Marsha many times as they were very kind to me. I also remember spending countless hours in their basement spotting Doug when he was lifting weights. After high school we both attended Wayne State College and were roommates for two years. After graduation Doug left and we lost touch for many years but I often thought about the good times we had together. He was an inspiration to me and a great friend and I will miss him forever. My prayers are with you and your family RIP Doug.

I first met Doug in 1973 when we were both working at FBIHQ. One day after lunch, he introduced me to this young lady who would become my wife. We were both in NAC-76-11, and after Quantico, we went our separate ways. I remember Doug as being a friendly guy with a great sense of humor. He will be missed, but he is now with Mary Francis.

Doug was a key leader for 10 years in the Federal Bureau Of Prisons Life Connections Program at USP Leavenworth. His experience in the FBI combined with his faith enabled him to talk to the men in the program about the changes they needed to become the people God had created them to be. He guided over 600 men in the 18 month program to becoming not only law abiding but also inspiring leaders in their families and communities. It was an honor to be his friend and colleague. When I personally went through the darkest year of my life he and Mary were bedrock friends.
