John Joseph Tomc 92, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at Overland Park Regional Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas.  

John was born on April 29th,1934 in Kansas City, Kansas to John and Jennie Tomc.  John attended Holy Family Church in grade school. At Bishop Ward High School he excelled in basketball and track.  After graduation he attended Benedictine College and graduated from Rockhurst College with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He joined the Army after college and served in Japan for two years.  After the Army he was employed at Western Electric in Lee's Summit, Mo.  He worked as a Production Department Analyst, Industrial Engineer, Shop Supervisor and Facilities Manager until he retired after 26 years with the company.

John was an avid sports fan.  Throughout his life he became involved in many sports activities from playing league basketball and spending many years as a catcher in fast pitch AA softball.  During that time, he was a Boy Scout Leader and basketball and softball coach.  He spent many hours following his beloved Kansas Jayhawks.

John also enjoyed traveling and spending vacation time in Florida. The highlight of his trip to Italy was touching the hand of Pope John as he passed by the crowd in his motorcade.

John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Jennie Tomc, sisters Bernice Herpich, Evelyn Northern and brother Daniel Tomc.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Dorothy Tomc, children - Christopher Tomc, (Deanna)  Janet Powell (David), Susan Green (Kevin). - two grandchildren Emily Green and C J Green and sister Jeannette Wilson.

Visitation will be 4pm to 6 pm on Tuesday, May 12 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, Kansas.  Funeral Mass will be at 10 am on Wednesday, May 13th at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 W 93rd Street, Overland Park, Kansas. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions in his memory to the Strawberry Hill Museum
