David Michael Dumovich, 73, of Kansas City, Kansas, our greatly loved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on August 21, 2026 at Kansas City Hospice House.
Dave was a Dotte original. Born February 20, 1953, the third of eight children of George and Virginia Dumovich, he proudly spent his entire life in Wyandotte County. He grew up in a bustling house surrounded by love, faith, and neighborhood friends. He attended St. Peter Cathedral grade school and graduated from Bishop Ward High School.
Dave paid his own way through the University of Kansas, graduating with a degree in business and accounting. He remained a proud and fiercely loyal Jayhawk for the rest of his life. He showed a strong work ethic from his first job stocking shelves at the neighborhood grocery store in high school, through accounting positions at Osco Pharmacy and AMC Theatres, to his final role as Controller at Westlake Hardware.
Work, though, was always secondary to family and friends. Dave’s many nieces and nephews were convinced he had a direct line to Santa Claus because he always arrived with the perfect presents and favorite treats. Even from hospice, he made sure his sisters knew to get the cereal out of his cabinets for his great-nephew who likes to feed the fish.
Despite losing his vision in his 40s and facing ongoing health problems in later years, Dave never complained and never stopped showing up for his family. He remained a fixture at family gatherings and celebrations, arriving with one pocket full of treats for the dogs and another full of balloons to blow up for his great-nieces and great-nephews. He was most content with a baby or dog on his lap, listening to stories about what everyone was up to, the commotion of little voices around him, and his brothers debating which of their heads was now the baldest.
Another great gift in Dave’s life was his lifelong group of friends, affectionately known as “the Goonies.” As his health declined, they made sure he was still part of everything, taking him on fishing trips and bringing the gathering to his house most Wednesday evenings, a tradition he always looked forward to.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, George and Virginia Dumovich, and his infant sister, Julie Mary. He is survived by his siblings, Georgiana Wurzer, Jean Langkop, Joan (Louis) Dusil, Don (Susie) Dumovich, Dennis (Anna) Dumovich, and Daniel (Ronda) Dumovich, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and one great-great nephew.
Dave had a heart of gold. He showed his love for people in countless small ways: by showing up, remembering what mattered to him, and always having a treat tucked away for someone he loved. His family and friends will miss him deeply, and his spirit lives on in the love we will carry for him always.
Visitation and Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 28, 2026 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kansas City, KS. Visitation begins at 9:30 am followed by Mass at 10:30 am.
