Lena Pauline `Polly` Martin Erickson , Age: 88
May 21, 1929 -- January 08, 2018

L. Pauline “Polly” Erickson (88) went home to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully on January 8, 2018. Polly was born May 21, 1929 in the family home on Main Street in St. Clairsville, Ohio to Dr. J.B. and Lena Liggett Martin. Growing up in Eastern Ohio and attending second grade in New Mexico had a significant influence on her life – God, family, friendships, golf and the mountains. Learning to play golf from her brother, she won the Belmont Hills Club Championship at age 13 and began playing in regional golf invitationals. She attended two years at the University of New Mexico, then graduated from The Ohio State University in 1951 with a degree in Physical Education. She was a member of the women’s golf team and Pi Beta Phi fraternity.

After graduation, while serving as Women’s Physical Education Director at Lake Forest College, she was challenged to a round of golf by the new head basketball coach John Erickson. On August 31, 1956, Polly and John were married at Thoburn United Methodist Church in St. Clairsville. Polly continued to pursue her passion for golf and physical education after moving to Madison, Wisconsin where she was the City Women’s golf champion seven times, served on the Wisconsin Council for Fitness and was later inducted into the Madison Hall of Fame. While living in Madison, she and John were blessed with three daughters, Lew Ellen, Kelly and Kim. Polly taught all three daughters to play golf, passing on a family tradition to the next generation.

In 1968, the family moved to Milwaukee and Polly’s faith grew while attending a weekly Bible Study in a movie theater led by Jill Briscoe. This prepared her for the next move to Kansas City, where her husband served as the National President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It was during these 40 years she demonstrated her commitment to Hillcrest Covenant Church, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Ministries of New Life, House of Hope, Just Give Me Jesus and countless others ministries. For years, Friday mornings were spent with the ladies she called her “Friday Friends”. Along with her faith in Jesus and her passion for knowing God through studying the Bible, listening to sermons, and being in church, she will be remembered for her floppy hats and kindness.

In the last fifteen years of her life, she found joy with family and friends at their “golf house” on the 18th fairway of Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Since April 2016, Polly and John have resided in Tulsa, Oklahoma where they are members of Redeemer Covenant Church.

Polly was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lewis Martin, her sister-in-law Martha Martin, and brother-in-law John Plummer. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John Erickson; her three daughters, Lew Ellen Erickson of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kelly Armes and husband Joe of Dallas, Texas, and Kim Abbott and husband David of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren Annie and John Armes, Bryan Abbott and wife Morgan, Mary Ellen Grigsby and husband Scotty; sister-in-law Carolyn Plummer of Rockford, Illinois; nieces Maggie Martin Giesenhagen and husband Bill of Denver, Colorado, Nancy Drago and husband Joe of Naperville, Illinois; and nephew Jeff Plummer of Rockford, Illinois.

A Service of Remembrance and Celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 15th at Hillcrest Covenant Church (8801 Nall Avenue, Prairie Village, Kansas) with lunch following in Fellowship Hall. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 14th at Porter Funeral Home (8535 Monrovia Road, Lenexa, Kansas) from 3:00-5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Fellowship of Christian Athletes - Polly Erickson Memorial (8701 Leeds Road KC, MO 64129) or Hillcrest Covenant Church (8801 Nall Avenue Prairie Village, KS 66207).

Polly was a remarkable woman. While active at Hillcrest Covenant she would also worship with us at Resurrection from time to time. There was always an encouraging word, notes, even a treasured gift she gave me that sits in my study at home. There was no missing Christ's Spirit in her (and John). I'm grateful to have been among the many she touched and blessed in her life. I'm grateful today she is seeing what we only dream of on this side of eternity.

What a Wonderful GODLY CHRISTIAN Lady, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, In-Law, Friend, First Lady of FCA, and many other Terrific and Magnificent Things!!! I'm glad I had the honor to meet her and her husband on a few occasions. Of all the hats she wore, I have a suspicion that she excelled most at being John's wife and the mother of his and her children!! May GOD the FATHER and JESUS CHRIST The SON Comfort you all and give you Peace in Abundance in your Sorrow and Loss, but Celebration of a life well lived!!!!!

Friend from church KANSAS CITY ,

I treasure Polly's memory because she had a huge part in our deciding to join Hillcrest Covenant back in 2004. She was at the Welcome Center the first time Bill and I visited and was very warm in her greeting. But the next week when we returned she remembered our names, knew we had visited the week before and let us know how glad she was we had come again. That made such a difference in our decision to join a loving fellowship of believers like Polly! And what an amazing blessing Hillcrest has been ever since! I will look forward to catching up with her so we can stroll down those streets of gold together!

Dear sisters, As l thought about your mom his week, it brought a smile to my face. She was so energetic and full of life. It seems like every time I had a conversation with her she would bring up the Lord. What a great example of a life-long faith. I hope your time together this week has brought warm memories, laughter and tears. Dawn

I was so sad to hear of Polly's passing. I so wanted to attend either the visitation or service but unfortunately was unable to come to either. I want you to know your momma was a great inspiration to me. I met her in Friday Friends and quickly fell in love with her wit, her authenticity and her knowledge of the Bible. She welcomed me with open arms and I always felt loved and cherished so I always tried to sit nearby whenever I could. I met Polly at a rough time in my life. I had no support system and she and the gals in FF became that for me. I will always carry her in my heart and remember how unique and wonderful she was to me. My hope is when I am at the age where I am free to attend Bible studies regularly, I will be able to offer to another 40 year old woman, what Polly offered to me. To me, she represented all that we are supposed to be in Christ. I know you will miss her terribly, but I assure you she is there with you and waiting to see you once again, when God calls you to go home. Until then, I pray that God's great arms surround you and give you peace.
