Dr. Shu Wu, Professor of Economics and Associate Chair, Department of Economics at University of Kansas, and a resident of Overland Park, KS, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 after a hard fight with cancer.  The Funeral Liturgy will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the Greater Kansas City Chinese Christian Church, 5316 Quivrira Rd., Shawnee, KS 66216. Shu was born September 6, 1966, in Chengdu, China, the son of Jucai Wu and Yuhua Huang. As the eldest son of the family and best student from primary school to high school, Shu was always the joy and pride of his parents.  In July 1983, Shu was accepted by Peking University, the best university in China, when he was less than 17 years old. Shu graduated from Peking University with a B.S. in Mathematical Mechanics and a M.S. in Management Science in 1987 and 1990, respectively. In 2000, Dr. Wu joined the University of Kansas as an Assistant Professor and Charles W. Oswald Faculty Scholar after receiving his Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University. Shu was a very private man who was universally respected and admired by all.  He was a deeply compassionate and loyal man, profoundly interested in the development of others before himself.  His intellectual powers knew no boundaries. He will be deeply missed. In addition to his great profession accomplishments, Dr. Shu Wu is a devoted husband to his lovely wife Lucy, a loving father of two beautiful children, Felicia and Felix, and a great friend to be around. He loves traveling the world with his family, watching his daughter playing volleyball, biking with his son in the woods, taking spectacular photograph’s of the nature, and most of all enriching the world of people around him with his poetic, philosophic thoughts. Even amidst of his fight with cancer, he cared and supported other cancer fighters. Dr. Shu Wu found faith in Jesus while going through his cancer treatment in Houston. He was baptized at Greater Kansas City Chinese Christian Church on April 16, 2017. Prof. Wu was a member of my dissertation committee and my professor at the University of Kansas in 2014. I have many fond memories of him, however the one that sticks out in my mind to this day is the scheduling of my dissertation defense. Shu told me that he could not make any time before 9 AM, because he wanted to see his children off to school in the morning. I have always been impressed by his devotion both to his family and to his work. I aspire to be that dedicated as both a father and a teacher. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn. He was a remarkable man who left positive changes in those he met. He will be missed.

former KU colleague Seoul ,

I have long been planning to visit Lawrence and meet my old friends there. Shu was at the top of my to-do-list. I am totally shocked at hearing about his obituary notice. Shu and I have started our academic career in the Department of Economics at KU around the same time (Shu was a few year ahead of me). He had always been a good friend of mine. My memory about him is full of his warm smile and calm and thoughtful advices on many problems and issues I faced at that time. I wish that Shu will rest forever in peace and in happiness. I will wish the best for his daughter and son, and his wife.
